Markets in Budapest: Market Halls and Farmers Markets Compared

The workhorse food hall of south Buda at Kosztolanyi Dezso ter, with a full flower row and a supermarket on the lower floor that keeps trading on Sunday while the hall itself is shut.

Good to know: Open Mon 06:30 to 17:00, Tue to Fri 06:30 to 18:00, Sat 06:30 to 15:00, and the lower floor (CBA supermarket) Sun 07:00 to 14:00. The flower row keeps its own longer hours, Sat to 16:00 and Sun 07:00 to 14:00, so a Saturday afternoon trip gets you flowers but not the food hall. Entry is free and the hall shuts on public holidays.

Angyalfold's own hall, owned by the XIII. district and open seven days a week, with three floors of producer tables, shops and a supermarket sitting straight on top of the M3 metro.

Good to know: Open Mon to Fri 06:00 to 18:00, Sat 06:00 to 14:00, Sun 06:00 to 13:00, and closed on public holidays, per the hall's own opening hours page; the metro level runs longer, to 22:00 on weekdays and 16:00 at weekends. Parking is free for the first 60 minutes and HUF 800 an hour after that from 1 July 2026, paid by number plate at machines inside the shopping level.

The most central market on the Buda side, a minute from Szell Kalman ter, run by a company wholly owned by the II. district and one of the few Budapest markets with a working English website.

Good to know: There are no building-wide hours here, they are set unit by unit, so check the market's own shop list before a special trip. On that list the food units open at 07:00 or 08:00, close between 13:00 and 15:00 on Saturday, are shut on Sunday, and most of them are also closed on Monday, which catches people out. Tuesday to Friday mornings are the safe window. Weekend design and maker markets take over parts of the building several times a year.

Zuglo's food hall on Bosnyak ter, a plain neighbourhood market with no tourist trade at all and trams 3, 62 and 62A at the door.

Good to know: Open Mon 06:00 to 17:00, Tue to Fri 06:00 to 18:00, Sat 06:00 to 14:00, closed Sunday and on public holidays; entry is free and parking follows the current tariff. Check before you go, the operator changes holiday hours at short notice.

The restored hall sitting directly over the M4 station at Rakoczi ter, the nearest real food market to the VII. and VIII. district centre and an easy walk from the Grand Boulevard.

Good to know: The earliest closer of the city-run halls: Mon 06:00 to 16:00, Tue to Fri 06:00 to 18:00, Sat only 06:00 to 13:00, closed Sunday and on public holidays. Turn up before noon on Saturday or you will find shutters. Trams 4 and 6 plus metro M4 at the door. The number listed here is the one on the hall's own page and on the operator's English opening hours page; the Hungarian version of that page gives a different last two digits, so use the hall page if a call fails.

Obuda's food hall a short walk from Florian ter, on trams 1 and 17, and the main option for anyone living in the III. district who does not want to cross the river.

Good to know: Note the late Monday start: Mon 07:00 to 16:00, Tue to Fri 06:00 to 18:00, Sat 06:00 to 14:00, closed Sunday and on public holidays. Entry free, parking per the current tariff. Check before you go.

Terezvaros' producer market on the square, now sharing the space with the container units that house the displaced hall traders, and the closest thing the VI. district has to a daily greengrocer.

Good to know: Important change: the 19th century hall closed to shoppers on 17 June 2025 for an interior rebuild, trading restarted on 23 June 2025 in a temporary market on the producer section of the square, and by December 2025 the district reported the traders housed in container units between the producer tables and the hall building. The works run to 2027. No opening hours are published for the temporary market, by the district or by the market itself: hours are set by the individual traders and at least some of them close on Monday, so ask a stall or check the district's social channels before making a trip rather than assuming a pattern.

The small hall on Batthyany ter, wedged into one of the best transport interchanges in the city (M2, tram 19 and 41, the H5 HEV and buses 39, 109, 111), which makes it a convenient top-up stop rather than a weekly-shop destination.

Good to know: The operator does not publish hall-wide hours here: opening times are set individually by each unit, and the building closes on public holidays. Entry is free, and parking means the surrounding streets. Check the unit you need before making a trip.

The landmark hall at Fovam ter, and the one every guidebook sends people to: worth a visit for the building, the paprika and the pickle counters, but the only market on this page where you will queue behind tour groups.

Good to know: The operator still contradicts itself on Sunday. The hall's own page and the Hungarian version of the summary opening hours page both list Mon to Fri 06:00 to 18:00, Sat 06:00 to 16:00 and Sun 10:00 to 16:00, while the English version of that same summary page shows a shorter Monday, Sat to 15:00 and Sunday closed. Two of the three say Sunday open, but ring the hall before making a Sunday trip. Entry is free and the hall shuts on public holidays. Treat the ground floor as a market and the upstairs gallery as a food court and souvenir floor: anything aimed at visitors is priced for footfall rather than for a weekly shop.

Certified organic only: the organisers say the sole foods sellable here are ones holding a valid Biokontroll Hungaria certificate, and that every trader belongs to a member body of the Hungarian Biokultura Association. Held in the MOM Kult courtyard.

Good to know: Every Saturday, 06:30 to 13:00, and the good stock goes early. The association's own page points visitors to a 100-space parking house, trams 61 (Csorsz utca) and 59 (Apor Vilmos ter) and buses 8, 102, 105, 110, 112 and 139. Run by the Hungarian Biokultura Association, so expect Hungarian as the working language; the market publishes no English pages.

A small, well-curated Saturday producer market in the garden of the oldest house in the Taban, with its own sourdough bakery stand and a coffee stand, and a loyalty card scheme that gets you discounts from individual growers.

Good to know: Every Saturday 08:00 to 13:30 at the Tigris utca side of the Czako sports centre, which is where it moved after the site was rebuilt in summer 2023, so older listings send you to the wrong entrance. No phone number is published; the market posts weekly updates on social media.

The one genuinely central Sunday market: 30 to 40 vetted producers set up inside Szimpla Kert, which by its own count pulls 3,000 to 4,000 shoppers a week, with live music and children's activities alongside the stalls.

Good to know: Sundays only, 09:00 to 14:00 per Szimpla's own market page, though some listings still say 15:00, so aim early. The upstairs buffet breakfast built from the producers' own goods is HUF 5,000 per person, free under 6 and half price to 12. Expect a crowd and very little space by late morning. Note the odd web setup: szimpla.hu itself carries nothing about the market and szimpla.hu/piac returns an error, so the linked page above, on Szimpla's own teszt subdomain, is the only first-party source for the hours and the breakfast price. That page is Hungarian only, though Szimpla's own visitor information pages are in English.

The market everyone means when they say Ecseri: a permanent second-hand market run by the city market company, open all week, with the big open-air free market running alongside it every Saturday from 05:00.

Good to know: Permanent market Mon to Fri 08:00 to 16:00, Sat 05:00 to 15:00, Sun 08:00 to 13:00; the separate Saturday open-air Hasznaltcikk Szabadpiac runs 05:00 to 14:00 and is closed on weekdays. Saturday at dawn is when the real stock appears. It is a long way out beside the M5 exit road, buses 54 and 55 from Boraros ter; a seller's pitch ticket costs HUF 5,500 on the gate. Closed on public holidays.
