Dentists in Budapest: English-Speaking Clinics Compared

Budapest is one of Europe's dental tourism capitals, and that works in your favor as an expat: nearly every serious private clinic publishes a full price list, works in English and is used to foreign patients. On published lists a single implant runs from about EUR 520 to EUR 1,290 depending on the brand (Alpha Bio, Neodent, Straumann, Nobel), a zirconia crown EUR 345 to 560, and a hygiene session EUR 70 to 100, numbers Western European patients typically pay two to three times over. Read every implant quote carefully: some clinics include the abutment in the implant price and some bill it separately at EUR 220 to 385, and the crown on top is always extra. Clinics aimed at Hungarian patients price the same work in forints, often lower still.

There is also a genuinely useful public route. With a TAJ card your district dentist treats emergencies, decay, extractions, root canals and tartar removal without charge, and full dental care is free apart from lab costs for under 18s, for students in full-time education after 18, from the start of a pregnancy until 90 days after the birth, and over 62, per the NEAK rules. What you always pay privately or publicly is the dental technician's work: crowns, bridges and dentures.

This page compares verified English-speaking private clinics across Pest and Buda, one true 24/7 private emergency dentist, and the public university emergency service, with prices taken from each provider's own published list and ratings as of August 2026. Treatment plans differ clinic to clinic, so get any big quote in writing and see the wider picture in our dentistry and dental tourism guide.

The public (TAJ) route

Every Budapest address is assigned to a district dentist (korzeti fogorvos). With a valid TAJ card and, from age 14, photo ID, insured adults get screening, fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, gum treatment, tartar removal and all emergency care free of charge; you only pay the technical (lab) costs of crowns, bridges and dentures. Root fillings are covered once per tooth per year. Care is fully free, lab costs excepted, under 18, for students in full-time education after 18, from the start of a pregnancy until 90 days after the birth, and over 62. A dentist must treat insured patients from outside their own district on the same free terms. One catch that hits expats: if your cover comes from a paid agreement with the health fund (megallapodas) rather than employment, NEAK states that only emergency dental care is covered. Out of hours, the public dental on-call service (fogorvosi ugyelet) is run by the Semmelweis University dental institute in the VIII. district. Its own building at 1088 Budapest, Szentkiralyi utca 40 has been closed for renovation since 1 March 2025, expected to last to the end of 2026, so do not go there. Weekday daytime emergency care is at 1088 Budapest, Szentkiralyi utca 47; nights, weekends and public holidays are at 1085 Budapest, Maria utca 52. No appointment is possible. Bring photo ID (identity card, driving licence or passport), your address card, and your TAJ card or European Health Insurance Card. Note that Semmelweis publishes two different sets of hours: its relocation notice and the on-call page give a continuous 7:30 to 19:30 day service with the night shift from 19:30 to 7:30, while its English check-in page still lists reception from 8:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:00 with the night service from 20:00 to 7:00 and the surgery closed for disinfection between 7:00 and 8:00, 13:00 and 14:00, and 19:00 and 20:00. Arriving outside those disinfection windows works under either version. Details on the FSZOI relocation page and the on-call page. Realistic expectations: paperwork and queues, staff who mostly work in Hungarian, and standard rather than cosmetic materials. For implants, veneers and anything aesthetic you will be in the private system anyway.

The options, compared

A private first consultation in Budapest runs from free to about HUF 22,000, and a single implant from about EUR 520 to 1,290 depending on brand; every price below comes from the clinic's own published price list, as of August 2026. Check whether the abutment is included before comparing implant prices.

Good to know: Do not go to Szentkiralyi utca 40: patient care there is suspended for renovation. Night, weekend and holiday emergencies are at Maria utca 52 (1085); weekday daytime emergencies at Szentkiralyi utca 47 (1088). No appointments. Bring photo ID, your address card and a TAJ card or EHIC. Semmelweis publishes two versions of the hours, a continuous 7:30 to 19:30 day shift with nights 19:30 to 7:30, and an older reception schedule of 8:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:00 with nights 20:00 to 7:00 and disinfection closures at 7:00, 13:00 and 19:00, so avoid arriving on the hour in those three windows. Good to know: A full GBP price list is published, so you can budget before travelling, but the final plan still comes from a personalised quote. Good to know: Geared to bigger restorative cases: a free treatment plan within 24 to 48 hours from your X-ray, and an on-site consultation advertised as free and worth EUR 170, although the published price list still shows EUR 40 for a treatment plan and written quotation, so get the offer confirmed in writing. Budget the abutment on top of the implant. The contact page also lists a second address at Pasareti ut 57 in the II. district, and the homepage still shows an unedited template phone number, so use the +36 number.

Good to know: Even at 3am you must phone ahead to book; the clinic occupies Akacfa utca 10 and 13. Watch the on-call fee: both the Dental Network emergency price list and Haifa Dent's own price list show a HUF 10,000 night surcharge between 20:00 and 8:00, while the clinic's homepage banner advertises no on-call fee, so agree the total on the phone. Haifa Dent's own list also prices a specialist exam with treatment plan at HUF 6,000, below the HUF 8,500 emergency consultation quoted here.

Ratings, prices and details were last checked in August 2026 from each provider's public pages, Google Maps and Trustpilot; they change, so always confirm directly with the provider before booking or paying. Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental implant cost in Budapest?

On published 2026 price lists, clinics aimed at local patients charge HUF 160,000 to 300,000 per implant (Medicare Dental HUF 160,000 with the surgery, Batorfi HUF 190,000 to 300,000 by brand), while dental tourism clinics price in euros: Evergreen Dental EUR 520 to 855, Kreativ Dental EUR 680 to 1,100, Helvetic Clinics EUR 690 to 1,290. Compare like with like: Helvetic includes the abutment and healing screw in those figures, while Kreativ, Batorfi, Madenta, Medicare and Dental Clinic in Budapest bill the abutment separately at roughly HUF 60,000 to 125,000 or EUR 220 to 260. The crown on top is extra everywhere, typically EUR 345 to 560 for a zirconia or E.max crown.

Is dental care free in Hungary with a TAJ card?

Largely yes for the basics: with a TAJ card your district dentist provides screening, fillings, extractions, root canals, tartar removal and emergency care free of charge, and full dental care is free apart from lab costs under 18, for students in full-time education after 18, from the start of a pregnancy until 90 days after the birth, and over 62. What is never free is the dental technician's work, so you pay the lab costs of crowns, bridges and dentures even in the public system. NEAK also warns that people insured through a paid agreement rather than employment get only emergency dental care covered.

Where can I find an emergency dentist in Budapest at night?

Two options. The public on-call service run by the Semmelweis University dental institute takes night, weekend and holiday patients at 1085 Budapest, Maria utca 52 (weekday daytime cases go to Szentkiralyi utca 47 instead, because the institute's own Szentkiralyi utca 40 building is closed for renovation). No appointment is possible, it is free for TAJ-insured emergencies, and you need photo ID, your address card and a TAJ card or EHIC. The private alternative is a 24/7 clinic such as Haifa Dent on Akacfa utca, where the network price list shows a consultation at HUF 8,500 and a HUF 10,000 on-call surcharge between 20:00 and 8:00, although the clinic's own homepage advertises no on-call fee, so confirm the total on the phone before you go.

Do dentists in Budapest speak English?

At the private clinics that serve expats and dental tourists, yes: most of the clinics on this page run English websites and employ English-speaking dentists or patient coordinators, and several also work in German, French, Italian or Russian. It is not universal, though. Batorfi Dental, for example, publishes only in Hungarian. In the public district system Hungarian dominates, so bring a Hungarian speaker or choose a private clinic for anything complicated.

Why is dental treatment so much cheaper in Budapest than in the UK?

Lower wages and lab costs, high competition and volume: Budapest clinics have treated foreign patients at scale since the 1990s and advertise savings of 30 to 70 percent versus UK and Western European prices. The established clinics use the same premium implant brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare), run on-site labs and hold ISO certifications, so cheap does not have to mean low quality. Savings are not uniform across the price list, though: at VitalEurope a crown costs GBP 310 in Budapest against GBP 807 in London, but the implant itself is listed at GBP 399 in both cities. Always compare itemised written quotes.
