Private Clinics and English-Speaking Doctors in Budapest Compared

Budapest has a deep private healthcare market where English-language service is widely available, though rarely free of extra charges: expat-focused clinics such as FirstMed, big networks such as Medicare (the former Medicover Hungary) and Doktor24, and full private hospitals such as Dr. Rose and Duna Medical Center. Based on the price lists published by the providers themselves, a GP or internal medicine consultation runs from about HUF 29,000 at Waberer Medical Center to HUF 46,000 and up at FirstMed, and a specialist visit roughly HUF 29,000 to 55,000 (see for example the Medicare consultations price list and the FirstMed price list).

Three things are worth knowing before you book. First, there is a free public baseline: with a TAJ card you register with a district GP (haziorvos) and pay nothing at the point of use, though English is hit and miss in the public system. Second, two of the networks below publish a surcharge for being seen in English: Medicare adds HUF 9,000 per examination and states the written medical opinion is issued in Hungarian anyway, and RMC Clinics charges an additional doctor and nurse fee of HUF 10,900. Third, most of these providers are specialist clinics, not family practices; only FirstMed, Swiss Clinic, TritonLife, SOS Doctors and Expat Medical publish a general practitioner or family-doctor style consultation.

Brand names in this sector move fast, so old recommendations mislead: Medicover Hungary rebranded to Medicare in April 2025, and the private hospital on Lechner Odon fasor dropped the Liv prefix and went back to plain Duna Medical Center in May 2026 when its partnership with the Turkish Liv Hospital network ended. This page compares 13 providers expats actually use, including a 24/7 house-call service and clinics with real online consultations (marked hybrid). Every address, phone number and price below was read on the provider's own site or price list in August 2026; confirm the current fee when you book, because private price lists change several times a year.

The public (TAJ) route: your free district GP

If you live in Hungary legally and have a TAJ card, you are entitled to a district GP (haziorvos) covered by the state insurer NEAK, with no fee per visit. Your registered address (the one on your address card) determines which practice must accept you, though you can ask another practice to take you: the patients' rights guidance of the state health line states that a patient may transfer to another GP once a year without giving a reason, and more often only with a valid reason such as a change of address (egeszsegvonal.gov.hu). To register, contact the surgery by phone or email first and bring your TAJ card, address card (lakcimkartya) and passport or residence permit. The GP is your first point of contact in the public system and issues the referrals (beutalo) most state specialist clinics expect. Realistic expectations: short GP queues but variable English, and weeks-long waits for some referred specialist appointments, which is exactly why the private clinics below exist. Official information in English on TAJ and entitlements is on the government health portal egeszsegvonal.gov.hu; a practical English walkthrough of GP registration is at How to Hungary.

The options, compared

GP and specialist consultations at Budapest's big private clinics currently run about HUF 29,000 to 55,000 per visit (premium hospitals price in EUR), and Medicare and RMC charge extra for being seen in English; every price below comes from the provider's published price list as read in August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private GP visit cost in Budapest?

Published price lists in August 2026 put an internal medicine or GP-type consultation at HUF 29,000 at Waberer Medical Center, HUF 32,900 at Medicare, from HUF 37,000 at Duna Medical Center, HUF 38,000 to 39,000 at Doktor24, HUF 43,000 at Buda Health Center and HUF 46,000 and up at FirstMed. Premium hospitals price in euros: Dr. Rose charges EUR 250 for a general medical consultation. Watch two extras: Medicare adds HUF 9,000 for a consultation held in English and RMC Clinics adds HUF 10,900. Note also that most of these are internal medicine specialists rather than family doctors; among the providers on this page, FirstMed, Swiss Clinic, TritonLife, SOS Doctors and Expat Medical are the ones that publish a general practitioner or family-doctor consultation.

Can I see an English-speaking doctor in Budapest without a TAJ card?

Yes. Private clinics bill you (or your insurer) directly and do not require Hungarian state insurance; you book, pay the listed fee and get documentation in English at most clinics. Two caveats from the providers' own pages: Duna Medical Center states that prices may differ for international guests and for patients without a Hungarian TAJ card, and Medicare states that even when you pay its HUF 9,000 English surcharge the written medical opinion and findings are issued in Hungarian as well.

Do doctors make house calls in Budapest?

Yes. SOS Doctors runs a 24/7 mobile service for expats and travelers with a published price list: a scheduled downtown house call by a GP is EUR 320, a 24/7 urgent house or hotel visit by a GP is EUR 440, and the site says urgent care is available around the clock, at most times within 30 to 90 minutes of your request. Surcharges stack on top, including EUR 30 for evenings, weekends and holidays and EUR 180 at night. Expat Medical Clinic (Dr. Tibor Timar), a GP practice built for expats, also does house visits including blood draws at home.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist in Budapest?

Not at private clinics: you book a dermatologist, cardiologist or any other specialist directly and pay the listed consultation fee. In the public (TAJ) system the district GP is the gatekeeper and most state specialist clinics expect a referral (beutalo) from your GP first.

Is telemedicine available in English in Budapest?

Yes, several providers run real remote consultations: FirstMed says health check-ups and chronic disease management are available seven days a week in person or by telemedicine through its FirstTeleMed service, Doktor24 lists a teleconsultation at HUF 35,000 on its English price list, Rozsakert Medical Center publishes online consultation fees from HUF 10,900 to 47,200, Buda Health Center lists telephone consultations at HUF 25,000, and SOS Doctors sells English-speaking teleconsultations priced by how fast you need the call back and which part of the day you request it.
