Opticians and Eye Clinics in Budapest: Tests, Glasses and Laser Prices

The default Hungarian optician chain, with a five step optometrist test, a 90 day eye test guarantee and a flagship store on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut in the V. district.

Good to know: The unlimited free re-tests belong to the paid Ofotert+ glasses subscription, not to walk-in customers, and unlimited lens swaps under it need at least a 0.25 dioptre change and the same lens type; the flagship shop is at 1051 Budapest, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut 16., other Budapest branches are listed in the store finder at ofotert.hu, health fund (egeszsegpenztar) cards are accepted, and the website and booking system are Hungarian only, so call if you need English.

A 21 store Hungarian chain, 20 optical shops plus one sunglasses shop, that runs a genuine fee based ophthalmologist clinic alongside the roughly 20 minute optometrist test.

Good to know: Budapest branches cover both sides of the river (Westend, Mammut II, GoBuda Mall, Etele Plaza, BudaPart, MOM Park, Polus Center, Pesti uti Tesco); the szemesz szakorvosi vizsgalat, Polateszt, colour vision and contact lens tests are always charged separately and the chain does not publish those fees on the site, a child under 14 having a first eye test must be seen by an ophthalmologist, and contact lens wearers are asked to agree wear time with staff before testing.

The national coordinating institute for ophthalmology and the seat of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society, examining 210,000 to 225,000 outpatients and performing 7,000 to 8,000 eye operations a year, and where complicated retinal, corneal and paediatric cases end up on a TAJ card.

Good to know: Use the clinic's own site and nothing else: on 26 July 2026 it published a notice warning that opening hours and contact details found on other websites are unofficial and may be misleading, so ignore third party booking listings. The adult general clinic takes bookings on +36 30 877 1764 weekdays 08:00 to 12:00 and will only see unbooked patients in urgent cases; the switchboard is +36 1 459 1500 extension 54500. Referral is not required for the outpatient clinics, an appointment is. Consultations run in Hungarian.

A 16 bed public eye department covering the X. and XVII. districts, with cornea, cataract, retina and eyelid sub-clinics and more than 50,000 outpatient contacts a year across its own clinics and the integrated outpatient centres.

Good to know: Phone lines are open only in short windows (+36 1 432 7798 Monday 12:00 to 14:00 and Friday 09:00 to 13:00; +36 1 432 7716 Monday 08:00 to 12:00, Wednesday 09:00 to 12:00 and Friday 08:00 to 12:00), and the department warns that assistants answer them between other work. Its Gyomro outpatient eye clinic is usable without a referral, by appointment except in urgent need, and it tells patients plainly that there is no subsidy for glasses under 6 dioptres. Bajcsy takes the Budapest eye emergency duty only on its rostered dates. Pupils are dilated for most examinations, so do not plan to drive afterwards.

Good to know: FirstMed publishes typical ranges rather than a single consultation fee and says the bill depends on whether it is a first visit, whether a Value Card or company discount applies and whether an insurer is billed, so ask the front desk for a quote. At the time of checking in August 2026 the site carried a notice that the clinic was having phone problems and asked patients to use [email protected], the website chat or WhatsApp on +36 70 620 5992 instead. It is a diagnostic and outpatient service: the ophthalmology page states it treats retinal problems non-surgically, so laser and cataract surgery happen elsewhere.

Buda's convenient one-stop private clinic inside the Rozsakert shopping centre, with a full English site and a published, itemised ophthalmology price list.

Good to know: Open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 14:00, which suits working hours; the eye clinic checks existing contact lenses and rules out complications rather than fitting new lenses from scratch, local anaesthesia is billed separately at HUF 11,300, and booking runs through the clinic phone line or the medicall.cc platform.

Twelve ophthalmologists focused on the back of the eye, so the obvious private option for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, high myopia and genetic retinal disease.

Good to know: The published price list is dated 2 January 2025, so confirm the current figures when you book. The base examination fee is charged in every case and imaging is added on top; the practice sits inside the Capital Square office building (tower 2, third floor) at Vaci ut 76, booking is via the online form or [email protected], no phone number is published, most examinations need pupil dilation so do not plan to drive, and the institute states it deliberately does not cover every area of ophthalmology.

Good to know: Prices are stated as valid from 12 January 2026 and are per eye; the laser prices include four follow-up examinations, but the free under 40 suitability examination is a promotion running to 31 August 2026 and the over 40 discount needs online registration, of which HUF 15,000 is then deducted from the treatment. Cataract and lens surgery are priced separately from HUF 299,000 per eye and include only the one day and one week checks. Good to know: The English URL focusmed.hu/en is an empty archive page and the site has no English pages, so treat this as a Hungarian language clinic and confirm English before booking; the price list does offer translation of findings and discharge summaries into English at HUF 2,500 each. Appointment only, weekdays 08:00 to 16:30 and Saturdays 08:00 to 16:00, reached by bus 26 or by car via the Arpad Bridge exit. The HUF 100,000 VISUMAX discount is 2 x HUF 50,000 and applies only when both eyes are treated, the offer runs to 31 August 2026 and must be used by 31 October 2026; toric lenses add HUF 100,000 per lens.

One of the few Budapest clinics that publishes ICL implant pricing, useful when your prescription is too strong for laser, and it states that every price includes the compulsory follow-ups.

Good to know: The laser suitability examination is free under 45 with no deadline attached and HUF 35,000 above that; the clinic states that every price includes the compulsory follow-ups and the prescribed examinations. Premium trifocal implants run HUF 619,000 to 867,000 per eye and toric versions of the lens surgeries are already included in the quoted prices. Standing discounts are HUF 10,000 off laser surgery on a student card and HUF 5,000 travel support for patients coming from outside Budapest. The site is Hungarian only, so confirm English by phone before booking.

The cheapest published entry point for laser correction in this comparison, with a genuine English site at budaeyecenter.com, a four day fast track package for patients flying in and a stated five year retreatment guarantee.

Good to know: The examination fee is deducted from the surgery price if you proceed, but only half of it when a single eye is treated, and not at all on Zero-Touch or PRK if you book surgery for the second working day after the examination, when the higher Fast Track price applies. Euro payments are converted at the daily MNB rate minus HUF 12, health fund (egeszsegpenztar) cards are accepted, and the clinic arranges discounted rooms at the Jagello Business Hotel for patients travelling in. A paediatric eye examination with a patient-arranged interpreter is priced separately at HUF 45,000, so agree the language of the consultation in advance.

Inside MOM Park with a fully English price list, and one of the few private centres that states cataract surgery funded by the national health insurance is also available there.

Good to know: It covers the medical side properly (glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, dry eye, cross-linking) as well as refractive surgery, so it works as a single clinic for a long-term condition. An emergency slot costs HUF 45,000 against HUF 35,000 for a standard one, HUF 20,000 of the pre-laser assessment is deducted if you go ahead, and femto laser or a toric implant add HUF 190,000 and HUF 95,000 per eye to the cataract packages. The clinic states that cataract surgery covered by the national health insurance is available there, but that the examinations required for it are charged.

An English-language optician in central Pest attached to a contact lens webshop: its own English page states that the licensed optometrists speak English, which almost no other Hungarian optician publishes.

Good to know: It is a webshop with a real shop attached between Nyugati and Oktogon (Monday, Wednesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday 10:00 to 19:00, closed at weekends; the English page simplifies this to 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays), so you can be fitted once and reorder online afterwards. Booking ahead is required for examinations. Unlike the chains it argues against the free test model, saying the cost is usually built into the products, and it accepts eye test results issued elsewhere. Delivery is free over HUF 20,000 with more than 5,400 pickup points; only the eye test pages are in English, the shop is Hungarian.
