Banks and Fintech in Hungary: Where Expats Keep Their Money

Answer first: if you live here, you want a forint account with a Hungarian IBAN. Domestic forint transfers run on the central bank's instant payment system, so money arrives within 5 seconds, every day of the year, 24 hours a day, up to HUF 20 million per transfer, and banks are not allowed to charge a surcharge for it, per the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. The same rails carry qvik, the QR, NFC, link and payment-request system that has been available in every Hungarian mobile banking app since 1 September 2024 and that Hungarian rules made free for customers, per MNB. Salary, rent and utility direct debits all sit on that domestic plumbing, which is why a local account number is the practical baseline even if a fintech app is what you actually open every day.

The retail market is nine main names, and one of them changed identity recently: MBH Bank is the product of a triple merger and only started operating under that name on 1 May 2023, after Budapest Bank was absorbed into MKB Bank on 31 March 2022 and Takarekbank merged into MKB Bank on 1 May 2023, the date MBH's own timeline gives for the completion of the merger. It now reports 2.4 million retail and corporate customers and 425 branches. Monthly account keeping across the market runs from HUF 0 on conditional or digital packages up to HUF 3,733 at CIB when the salary condition is missed, and every price on this page comes from the bank's own product page or published fee schedule.

Two things surprise newcomers. First, the financial transaction duty: transfers carry 0.45 percent capped at HUF 20,000 per item, with only the part above HUF 50,000 charged for private individuals, while cash withdrawal carries 0.9 percent with no cap, per RSM Hungary. Second, the fast selfie account opening that Hungarian banks advertise is often closed to foreigners: CIB's online route requires a card-format Hungarian ID card or driving licence plus an address card, birth in Hungary and Hungarian tax residency only. Most expats will be booking a branch appointment instead, so read this alongside the step-by-step guide to opening a bank account in Hungary. Nothing here is financial advice, and conditions change, so confirm with the provider before you sign.

The no-surprise baseline: the basic payment account

Every payment service provider in Hungary must offer a basic payment account (alapszamla). The obligation comes from the 2014 EU directive on the comparability of payment account fees, payment account switching and access to basic payment accounts. You can ask for one if you do not yet hold a payment account, or if you close the one you have and hold no right of disposal over another. Source: MNB, Alapszamla, last updated 17 February 2026.

The base fee is capped by law at 0.5 percent of the gross monthly minimum wage in force on the last day of the previous year. Banks undertook not to raise fees until 30 June 2026, so until then the alapszamla fee could not go above HUF 1,334 a month. With the December 2025 minimum wage at HUF 290,800, the cap from 1 July 2026 is HUF 1,454 a month. A cap is not a price, and banks can undercut it: MagNet Bank lists its Alapszamla 2 at HUF 1,454 a month, which is exactly the cap, but its own product page says the fee is charged at HUF 0 a month as a promotion for as long as inflation has not stayed below 4 percent for three consecutive months.

For that fee the account must include a bank card, two free cash withdrawals a month from Hungarian ATMs totalling at most HUF 150,000 (or a single branch withdrawal of up to HUF 50,000), and up to four free transfers a month totalling at most HUF 100,000. Forint card payments, forint cash deposits into the account and incoming direct debits cannot be charged for, and no credit line may be attached to the account.

Separately from the alapszamla, the free cash withdrawal declaration can be filed with the bank that holds your chosen forint account: from 1 February 2026 that gives two free withdrawals a month totalling HUF 300,000 from any Hungarian ATM or at the post office, per the same MNB page. It is not open to everyone. MNB's guidance on the scheme states that the entitlement belongs to a person qualifying as a consumer who has reached the age of 16 and has a residence or a place of stay in Hungary, which is the point newcomers trip over, and that only one declaration can be in force at a time, so it covers one designated account per person. The same guidance says a declaration filed by the 20th of a month takes effect from the following month. If you want to compare packages before choosing, MNB runs a free retail forint account comparison tool, listed first below.

Good to know: OTP's English contact page says English assistance is available at dedicated branches with English-speaking staff and that you can book an appointment for it; its own site states that foreigners opening a retail current account need a valid passport or travel document, and the OTP Group serves nearly 16 million customers across the region.

One of the few big Hungarian banks with a genuine English product site covering accounts, cards, loans, savings and mobile banking.

Good to know: The full discount on minimum plusz needs both a monthly credit at the level of the net minimum wage and HUF 500,000 in savings at the bank; K&H itself warns that the information on its English website is not exhaustive, so check the Hungarian conditions list or ask in branch before signing.

The George account is one of the few packages whose own product page states in writing that both resident and non-resident natural persons can open it, which matters if you arrive before your address card does.

Good to know: The discounted fee needs at least HUF 100,000 credited monthly, an electronic statement, an email address on file and approvals through the George app rather than SMS, and the exact fee inside the HUF 390 to 990 band depends on the value of the electronic transactions you initiate; the public product pages are in Hungarian, so confirm English service with the branch.

MBH Bank

PrivateHungarian retail bank (2023 triple merger)Multiple locations

The largest branch network in the country, 425 branches and 2.4 million retail and corporate customers as of the fourth quarter of 2025, with an English site at mbhbank.com.

Good to know: Check the name on your paperwork: MBH Bank Nyrt. started operating on 1 May 2023 out of a triple merger, with Budapest Bank absorbed into MKB Bank on 31 March 2022 and Takarekbank merging into MKB Bank on 1 May 2023, so old MKB, Budapest Bank and Takarek references still turn up; the Fix Nulla page also spells out the transaction duty, charging 0.45 percent capped at HUF 20,000 on the part of a transfer above HUF 50,000.

Raiffeisen Bank Hungary

Good to know: The Alapszamla can only be opened in a branch, and Raiffeisen publishes package fees in its conditions list rather than on the product pages, so ask for the Lakossagi bankszamla kondicios lista before you decide; the Yelloo student account it does price publicly is limited to customers between 14 and 26.

Good to know: Package fees are not published on the product pages, so the Ikon, Bonus, Private Plus and student packages are effectively quote-based until you read the conditions list or ask the call centre; the bank's SWIFT code is BACXHUHB and its Hungarian bank code is 109.

Good to know: The advertised online selfie account opening is not for most expats: CIB requires a card-format Hungarian ID card or driving licence plus an address card, birth in Hungary, a Hungarian permanent and mailing address and Hungarian tax residency only, so plan on a branch visit; the HUF 0 fee needs a monthly credit at the net minimum wage, which is net HUF 214,662 in 2026.

GRANIT Bank

The digital-first Hungarian bank, and the entry-level Hello package is HUF 0 a month with no conditions at all, which is rare on this market.

Good to know: Read the selfie opening requirements before you count on it: Granit's own page asks for an NFC phone and a chipped new-type Hungarian personal ID card issued after 1 January 2016, and tells anyone without one to open through VideoBank instead, so most newcomers are on the video route rather than the 5 minute selfie; only two Budapest points of contact, the central branch at Vaci ut 17 (weekdays 8:30 to 16:30) and a cashless branch on the first floor of WestEnd City Center at 1062 Budapest, Vaci ut 1-3 (weekdays 10:00 to 18:00); companies can open online through the Digitalis Vallalati Bankfiok, with identification over Granit VideoBank on weekdays between 8:00 and 17:00.

MagNet Magyar Kozossegi Bank

PrivateHungarian community bankMultiple locations

The one bank on this page that publishes an English identification route: MagNet runs a VideoBank customer due diligence service in English for customers with foreign citizenship, and on the Nova, MagNext and Szimpatia packages you set your own account keeping fee anywhere between HUF 0 and HUF 1,000 a month.

Good to know: The English VideoBank session runs Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 17:00 and Friday 8:00 to 16:00 and still asks for a valid passport plus a plastic Hungarian ID card and a Hungarian address card, so it helps once you are registered, not on day one; a small network rather than a branch on every corner, with the head office and Kozossegi Haz at 1062 Budapest, Andrassy ut 98 and ATMs at Astoria, Balassi Balint utca, Bartok Bela ut and Ulloi ut; the 24/7 customer line is +36 1 428 8888, and the Alapszamla 2 list fee of HUF 1,454 is exactly the legal cap but the bank's own page says it is currently charged at HUF 0.

Revolut

OnlineNeobank with a Hungarian branch and HU account numbersOnline

The fintech most expats in Budapest actually use, and it now has a real Hungarian branch: MNB's institution register lists Revolut Bank UAB Magyarorszagi Fioktelepe as an authorised bank branch at 1052 Budapest, Szervita ter 8, active since 1 November 2025, which is what makes a Hungarian account number possible.

Multi-currency accountHungarian account numberCardsCurrency exchangeJoint accountsKids accountsBusiness accounts

Good to know: Treat the Hungarian account number as something to check rather than assume: the migration of existing Hungarian customers to the branch has been rolled out in waves, so open the app and look at the account details you actually hold before handing them to an employer or a landlord. Revolut's own Hungarian site and help centre returned an access block every time they were requested for this update, so nothing here is quoted from Revolut: the branch details come from the MNB register, and plan prices, fees and the qvik and instant transfer coverage should be confirmed in the app or with Revolut. Note also that the account sits with a Lithuanian bank operating here through a branch, so ask Revolut which deposit guarantee scheme covers you.

Good to know: Wise states plainly on its HUF account page that the Wise account is not a bank account, and its help centre says Swift payments in currencies other than HUF cannot be received on the HUF details; on sending, its HUF transfer guide says payments are usually instant below HUF 20 million and take zero to one working day above that.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to open a bank account in Hungary as a foreigner?

It depends on the bank and on whether you walk into a branch or try to do it online. OTP states on its English site that foreigners opening a retail current account need to present a valid passport or travel document. Erste's George account is explicitly open to both resident and non-resident natural persons. Granit Bank looks open to everyone but is not: its selfie route needs an NFC phone and a chipped new-type Hungarian personal ID card issued after 1 January 2016, and its own page tells anyone without one to use the VideoBank route instead. CIB's online selfie route is only for customers who hold a card-format Hungarian ID card or driving licence plus an address card, were born in Hungary and have Hungarian tax residency only, so foreigners have to use a branch. In practice bring your passport, your residence permit or registration certificate, your address card once you have one, and your Hungarian tax identification number, then confirm the exact list with the branch before you go.

Do I need a Hungarian IBAN, or is Revolut enough?

Revolut is closer to a Hungarian account than it used to be. MNB's institution register lists Revolut Bank UAB Magyarorszagi Fioktelepe as an authorised bank branch in Budapest, active since 1 November 2025, and that branch is what allows a Hungarian account number. Existing Hungarian customers have been moved across in waves rather than all at once, so check in the app which account details you actually hold, and confirm with Revolut whether your account covers what you need before you rely on it. Wise is a different animal: it gives you Hungarian forint account details for receiving domestic HUF transfers, but Wise itself says in its help centre that the Wise account is not a bank account, and its HUF details cannot receive Swift payments in any currency other than forint. For salary, rent, utility direct debits and refunds from the authorities, a full domestic forint account is still the safest setup.

How much does a Hungarian bank account cost per month?

Published 2026 monthly account keeping fees range widely. Granit Bank's Hello account is HUF 0 a month with no conditions, MBH's Fix Nulla is HUF 0 with an electronic statement and a monthly credit of at least HUF 150,000 (HUF 247 with a paper statement), OTP Standard is HUF 469 with a monthly credit of at least HUF 150,000, Erste's George package is HUF 390 to 990 when its conditions are met and HUF 1,990 when they are not, and K&H minimum plusz is HUF 1,084 without discounts, HUF 542 with one condition met and HUF 0 with both. CIB ECO is HUF 0 if the net minimum wage (HUF 214,662 net in 2026) is credited each month, otherwise HUF 3,733 a month with an electronic statement.

What is the Hungarian transaction duty and will I pay it?

The financial transaction duty (penzugyi tranzakcios illetek) is charged at 0.45 percent on transfers with a cap of HUF 20,000 per transaction, and at 0.9 percent on cash withdrawal with no cap, per RSM Hungary. For private individuals transfers below HUF 50,000 are exempt and only the part above HUF 50,000 forms the duty base. The duty is legally payable by the service provider, but banks pass it on: MBH, for instance, notes on its Fix Nulla page that on the amount above HUF 50,000 a charge of 0.45 percent capped at HUF 20,000 is applied. Rent and larger transfers are where you notice it.

Which bank should a Kft or a freelancer use?

Compare the published business packages rather than the retail ones. Granit Bank publishes a Vallalkozoi Alapszamla 2 with free account keeping, a FIX Vallalkozoi Szamla at HUF 15,000 a month promotionally (HUF 25,000 after the promotion) and a FIX Pro at HUF 20,000 (HUF 30,000 after), and lets a Hungarian company complete opening online through its Digitalis Vallalati Bankfiok with document upload and video identification on weekdays between 8:00 and 17:00. MBH, K&H, Erste, Raiffeisen, UniCredit and CIB all run corporate arms as well. Whichever you pick, the company account has to be a domestic forint account for tax and NAV purposes, so read our guide to the business bank account in Hungary first.
