How to Meet People in Budapest: Meetups, Clubs and Language Exchanges

Four English-language events across three nights a week from a 2,106-member group that calls itself the "Leading English Stand-up Comedy Organizer in Hungary", with events on the calendar for 4, 5 and 6 August 2026 and every listed show free with donations.

Good to know: Venues alternate between Bunkert at Mozsar utca 9 (1066) in the VI. district and JO&JOE Budapest at Dohany utca 35 (1074) in the VII., where the Tuesday open mic and a rooftop showcase run back to back on the same night; the Thursday pub quiz is at Bunkert from 20:00 and is the easiest format if you want to be put on a team with strangers rather than watch a show.

A 1,569-member group whose Beer Tasting and English Language Meetup runs every Wednesday at 19:00 at the Beer People craft beer bar behind the Opera, mixing new arrivals with Hungarians practising English.

Good to know: The group describes itself for "an expat living in Budapest or a local who loves to practice your English skills"; no ticket price is published on the event listings, so budget for your own drinks. Beer People does not publish opening hours on its own site, so check with the bar before arriving early. Note the Meetup group's own URL still carries its former name, budapest-intentional-communities-meetup-group.

The most reliable weekly language exchange in town: 3,211 members, a 4.7 rating from 294 ratings, and a session every Saturday at 20:00 with dates already on the calendar through October 2026.

Good to know: The venue has moved: every upcoming event listed in August 2026 is at Paris, Texas Kavehaz on Raday utca in the IX. district, while Mixat on Krudy utca in the VIII. appears only in the past-events list, so check the specific event before you set off. The group describes itself as "friendly 20s-30s people", which is worth knowing if you are older, and coordination happens in a WhatsApp chat.

A ticketed Friday mixer at "6:00pm onwards every Friday" at the Sherlock Holmes Pub in Ujlipotvaros, with the Eventbrite series running dates through 25 December 2026 and aimed at international students, expats, travellers and locals who want structured conversation practice.

Good to know: The listing states "Cost: Ft1300 (Online only, no tickets at door)", which keeps the numbers predictable but means you cannot decide on the night; the organiser also warns "We are not affiliated with the venue, we just use the space", so ask staff for the social meetup rather than phoning the pub, and read the venue line on the ticket page before each date. The organiser's own Eventbrite profile page returned an error when checked in August 2026, so the ticket page is the only live first-party evidence for this series.

Titles its own site "Largest Social Run Club in Hungary" (its Luma page says Budapest), meets twice a week (every Wednesday plus one weekend day) for 5 to 15 km, says about half its runners are international and averages around 100 people a session.

Good to know: Exact meeting points and times are only shared in the sign-up email and the club's WhatsApp updates, so joining the list is the first step and the weekly runs are not publicly dated; the only dated public event on its Luma calendar in August 2026 was the RLC x Oatly Rakpart Relay on 12 September 2026. No fee is published for the group runs, but the club is also a shop and sells an optional RLC+ coaching subscription at Ft 8,499 a month, so do not assume every RLC product is free.

Good to know: Read the calendar before you count on a hike: the club describes weekend adventures in the Hungarian hills, but in August 2026 the only dated events were the two weekly climbing sessions, the last multi-day hike having run on 31 July 2026. A 1,275-member group that meets every second Monday at 18:00 at the ANT Collective co-working space to read and critique each other's writing, all in English, with 3 and 17 August 2026 on the calendar.

Good to know: Submissions are capped at 850 words "to give enough time for any other submissions being read at the event" and you are expected to bring questions about your own piece, so it suits people who want a task rather than small talk; the venue has changed before, so check the event page.

One of the country's biggest animal welfare centres, open to visitors free of charge Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, with a structured volunteer programme and regular dog-walking shifts.

Good to know: Registered volunteers can walk dogs Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00 and between 13:30 and 16:00. Walkers must be 18 or over (from 16 with a completed parental consent form), book a slot at least 12 hours ahead per the house rules, attend a training session and commit to at least two visits a month. The site has full English navigation but the volunteer rules and application flow are in Hungarian, and the application page said "Jelenleg nem all rendelkezesre idopont, igy NEM tudsz most jelentkezni" (no slots currently available, so you cannot apply now) when checked on 2 August 2026, so free visiting is the only guaranteed way in right now.

An English-speaking, multinational congregation that meets Sundays from 10:30 to 12:00 above the Montazs Art Cafe at Bikas Park on the M4 metro, with small groups as the actual friendship engine.

Good to know: Services are livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel if you want to look before you go, and the feed shows a service published on 2 August 2026, which is the clearest proof of life on this page; the small groups and volunteer teams are the part that turns a Sunday visit into a social circle. An independent non-profit chamber "serving its members since its foundation in 1991 by British investors", with a live calendar of English-language business events posted in July 2026 for September: a DSA compliance seminar with Baker McKenzie on 8 September and a CEO dinner with LUSH on 30 September at the Parisi Udvar Hotel.

Good to know: The membership application form does publish a price list, and it includes an Individual Member tier, so this is not companies only. It is still built around companies: the form asks for a company name, tax number and company size even for individuals, and membership runs 12 months from the commencement date and auto-renews unless you give a month's written notice. Email [email protected] to ask about attending an event as a guest; the events skew corporate, which is the point if you are job hunting or freelancing.

An English-language, multinational children's football club formed in September 2001, training Tuesdays and Thursdays between 16:30 and 19:30 in five age groups plus Saturdays at the KFKI ground at Csilleberc in the Buda hills, which puts expat parents on the same touchline every week.

Good to know: Fees are not published online, so email [email protected]. Bus 221 from Szell Kalman ter stops at the gate and takes about 24 minutes. The site's news feed was current in 2026 (training resumed after the winter break on Tuesday 6 January and summer camps ran from Monday 29 June, open to non-members), but the autumn restart date for the 2026-27 season had not been posted when this page was checked in early August 2026, so confirm before turning up.

A long-running Google Group described as "a virtual and real-life community for English-speakers", with open membership and threads on midwives, schools, childcare and where to find things.

Good to know: This is the quietest listing on the page and the one to set expectations for. Google Groups builds its thread list with JavaScript, so the archive resists automated reading, but the newest thread visible when checked on 2 August 2026 was dated December 2025 and nothing from 2026 could be confirmed. The group settings still say "Anyone on the web can join group" and "posts from new members will be held for moderation", so it costs nothing to join and post a question, but do not plan your first month around it.

The one big platform with a stated answer to the newcomer problem: Bumble lists Date and BFF as two separate apps, and says of BFF "Whether you're settling into a new city, starting college, or just looking for friends who get you, our latest features are built to help."

Good to know: BFF is no longer a tab inside the dating app: Bumble's own help page says that "once your BFF profile has moved over to Bumble For Friends, BFF mode will no longer be available in your Bumble app", so friend-finding is a second download, and the BFF page itself still reads "This page will update soon with everything you need to know", which is a sign the product is mid-change. Bumble publishes no Hungarian-language site (bumble.com/hu serves English) and no Budapest user numbers, so nobody can tell you how busy it is here. Tinder does run a full Hungarian-language site and says it operates in 190 countries. Apps sort you by language as much as by taste, so an English-only profile skews towards other internationals while a Hungarian one opens the local pool, and both work best as a supplement to the weekly in-person fixtures on this page.
