Language Schools in Budapest: Learning Hungarian Compared

Most people who land on this page want the same thing: to stop being illiterate in the country they live in. The good news is that Budapest has a real market for magyar mint idegen nyelv (Hungarian as a foreign language), and most schools publish their prices. As of August 2026 a classroom group course of three or more students runs from about HUF 1,400 to HUF 3,700 per 45 minute lesson depending on group size and time of day, two person courses cost more than that, one-to-one tuition runs from about HUF 6,500 to HUF 9,200 per lesson, and online tutor marketplaces undercut both.

The second reason people arrive here is citizenship. Hungary does expect Hungarian, but the way it is checked surprises people. For simplified naturalisation the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade states plainly that language skills do not have to be proven with a language exam: the authority receiving the application checks your Hungarian in conversation, and the whole procedure is conducted in Hungarian. The ordinary naturalisation route is different, because it adds a constitutional studies exam (alkotmanyos alapismeretek vizsga) that is held in Hungarian and costs HUF 161,400 from 1 January 2026. None of this is legal advice, so confirm your own case with the authority handling your file.

That is why the listings below flag exam preparation explicitly, and why three different exams need separating, because Budapest schools sell preparation for all of them. The ECL and ITK Origo exams are language exams. The Hungarian cultural knowledge exam is not a citizenship exam at all: the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing states that people applying for a national residence card or an EU residence card from 1 January 2025 onwards have to pass it, that it is taken in writing, in Hungarian, in Budapest, and that the fee is HUF 20,000 per date. The constitutional studies exam described above is the citizenship one. Several listings below sell a product called cultural exam preparation, and that product is aimed at the residence card exam, not at naturalisation. Everything else on this page is comparable too: format, level range, and the exact published price with its unit. For the wider question of whether you actually need the language, see learning Hungarian: do you need it?

The free and low-cost route

There is no free state Hungarian course for ordinary expats, but the budget floor is lower than the price tables suggest. The cheapest structured classroom option found here is Gutenberg Nyelviskola, whose 100 lesson Hungarian course for foreigners is advertised from HUF 139,990, roughly HUF 1,400 per 45 minute lesson with the textbook included. Check that one before counting on it: the figure sits under a validity marker reading 2026.05.31, the school's own homepage title still advertises 109,990 Ft, and the enrolment form only offers courses that started in January 2026. Balassi Education, the state Hungarian language programme run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, charges HUF 150,000 for a 60 class evening course and HUF 50,000 for its five session online ECL exam preparation, which is the cheapest exam-focused course on this page, on a fee sheet that says the fees hold from 30 June 2026 until the offer is withdrawn.

For genuinely free study, HungarianPod101 gives away a Survival Phrases course of more than 50 lessons plus the first three lessons of every learning path, with a seven day premium trial on top, per its published pricing page. On italki, trial lessons with Hungarian tutors start at USD 5, which is a cheap way to test three or four teachers before committing.

If your goal is the citizenship exam rather than the language itself, the body that runs the exam also runs free preparation for it. The Government Office of the Capital City of Budapest states in its 2026 information sheet on the constitutional studies exam that it holds one day preparatory consultations, that taking part is free of charge, and that a place must be booked in advance by email; the sheet lists a consultation date each month. The same sheet prices the textbook, Alkotmanyos alapismeretek by Maria Ugroczky, at HUF 5,100 and the retake of a failed exam part at HUF 80,700.

If you are a refugee, a person with subsidiary protection or a third country national in a vulnerable position, the NGO route matters: Menedek, the Hungarian Association for Migrants, states that it offers Hungarian language lessons, preparatory sessions for the citizenship exam and group meetings including Hungarian lessons for women and an introduction to the Constitution, from its VI. district office on O utca (phone +36 20 450 7245). Call before you go: the same page gives the office as O utca 3 in the body text and O utca 39 in the footer. Ask about eligibility and cost too, since the services are described as being for refugees, people with subsidiary protection and third country nationals, not for the general expat public, and EU citizens are not third country nationals.

Finally, the free option nobody prices: speaking practice. Language exchange and tandem evenings cost nothing but your time, and the same is true of a chatty neighbour, a market stall and a football team. Our Budapest expat community and meetups page is the place to start looking for those.

Good to know: Course fees exclude the coursebook: the school states that buying the MagyarOK book and workbook is the student's own responsibility. Private tuition comes in FIX (minimum two lessons a week) and FLEXI versions priced through the application portal rather than on the site, and the school names private lessons as the route if you are preparing for the citizenship exam or a Hungarian language exam. The cultural exam course prepares for the Hungarian cultural knowledge exam introduced for residence card applications in January 2025, not for naturalisation. Contact is [email protected].

Good to know: One of the very few providers with a named ECL exam preparation course at A2, B1, B2 and C1: five Friday sessions of 2 x 90 minutes online, groups of 5 to 12, with a placement interview first; its brochure gives start dates of 25 September and 16 April with application deadlines of 5 September and 18 March. The general language courses are separate and start 21 September 2026, 11 January 2027 and 12 April 2027, with application deadlines of 4 September, 4 December and 19 March. Both listed addresses are teaching venues, with customer service at 1107 Budapest, Zagrabi utca 1-3, and the office states it does not issue visa certificates. The paid language programme is not the same thing as the Balassi scholarship programmes advertised elsewhere on the site.

One-to-one lessons can be taken at the school, at your address or online. Good to know: The whole site and the checkout are in Hungarian only, so confirm that a teacher can work with you in English before you buy a block. FIX slots between 9:40 and 17:05 on weekdays are cheaper than FLEX slots: the four lesson solo block is HUF 31,920 on FIX and HUF 33,160 on FLEX. Blocks run 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 lessons solo, from 8 lessons for a pair and from 16 for a trio, and every package expires (30 days for four lessons, up to 240 days for 64), so buy the block you will realistically use. Good to know: The HUF 73,000 fee is the school's general group course price, not a Hungarian-specific one, and the Hungarian offer is a short entry on the languages page rather than a course page, so ask whether a Hungarian group is actually running. Group courses run 30 lessons over 5 to 7.5 weeks, mornings 08:30 to 12:30 or evenings 17:00 to 19:30, from A0 to C2, and discounts stack to 20 percent (early bird, returning student, referral). Good to know: No published price list at all, so everything is quote-based and you should ask for the fee per teaching hour in writing before signing. Preply says an unhappy student gets a free tutor replacement until satisfied, without naming a limit. Quality varies hugely between tutors, so screen for people who actually teach magyar mint idegen nyelv and know the ECL or Origo formats rather than just chatting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Hungarian course in Budapest cost?

On published 2026 price lists, a full classroom course costs from HUF 139,990 for 100 lessons at Gutenberg Nyelviskola, HUF 150,000 for 60 classes on the evening course at the state-linked Balassi Education, HUF 129,800 plus HUF 6,000 materials for an 80 lesson beginner intensive at Ulysses, and HUF 265,000 for the 128 lesson super intensive at Hungarian Language School. International House Budapest charges HUF 73,000 for a 30 lesson group course, though that is its general group price across the twelve languages it teaches rather than a Hungarian-specific one. One-to-one tuition is published at HUF 6,500 per lesson at Gutenberg, from HUF 7,400 per 45 minutes at Babylon Academy and from HUF 7,900 per 45 minutes at InterLanguage.

Do I need to pass a Hungarian language exam to get citizenship?

Not for simplified naturalisation. The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade states that applicants aged 14 and over have their Hungarian checked by the body receiving the application, that the required level presupposes intermediate two-way communication, and that language skills do not have to be proven with a language exam. Dialect or imperfect Hungarian is explicitly not a problem. The ordinary naturalisation route instead requires a constitutional studies exam held in Hungarian, with a written and an oral part, at a fee the exam organiser puts at 50 percent of the minimum wage, that is HUF 161,400 from 1 January 2026. Do not confuse that exam with the Hungarian cultural knowledge exam: the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing states that this second, separate exam applies to national residence card and EU residence card applications filed from 1 January 2025, is written only, and costs HUF 20,000 per date. Confirm your own situation with the authority handling your application.

Which Hungarian language exam should I take, ECL or ITK Origo?

Both are accredited exam systems that examine Hungarian as a foreign language, and Budapest schools prepare for either. The ECL system, run by a consortium based at Pecs, published complex exam fees, current when this page was checked in August 2026, of HUF 30,000 at A2, HUF 45,000 at B1, HUF 55,000 at B2 and HUF 59,000 at C1, with cheaper prices for a single written or oral part. Balassi Education runs a five session ECL preparation course at A2 to C1 for HUF 50,000, and Babylon Academy, Gutenberg and InterLanguage all advertise preparation for both ECL and ITK Origo.

What is the cheapest way to learn Hungarian in Budapest?

Per lesson, a large classroom group is the cheapest formal option: Gutenberg's 100 lesson course from HUF 139,990 works out at about HUF 1,400 per 45 minutes, and Babylon Academy charges HUF 70,000 for 32 lessons in a group of five or more, about HUF 2,190 each. Online tutor marketplaces are cheaper still, though read the unit: Preply's own filter shows Hungarian lessons at USD 3 to USD 40 and above per lesson, while its own question and answer section on the same page gives tutor rates of USD 7 to USD 100 per hour with an average of USD 27 per hour. On italki, trial lessons with Hungarian tutors start at USD 5. A self-study subscription such as HungarianPod101 starts at USD 4 per month on a 24 month plan, and its free tier costs nothing.

Can I learn Hungarian entirely online?

Yes, and several Budapest schools are built for it. Hungarian Language School sells online morning, evening and weekend group courses from HUF 99,000, Balassi Education runs its ECL preparation live online, Gutenberg teaches over Zoom, and Hungarian Lesson with Zsuzsi is an online-first school with published online course prices from HUF 58,000. For one-to-one practice, Preply and italki both list dozens of Hungarian tutors. What online cannot easily give you is the accidental practice of a classroom full of other beginners, so many learners combine the two.
