Kindergartens and Nurseries in Budapest: Bolcsode and Ovoda Compared

The free baseline in Pest: a 17-kindergarten municipal network for around 3,000 children, with an optional English bilingual programme running inside four of its sites.

Good to know: Tuition costs nothing and meals are the only bill, with free meals for families raising three or more children or under 130 percent of the net minimum wage per head. The BGC English programme costs HUF 699,000 a school year, uses native English speakers from 8:00 to 13:00, and is open only to XIII. district residents whose child turns 3 by 31 August and speaks in 3 to 4 word sentences.

A working example of the subsidised municipal nursery system on the Buda side: five bolcsodes with 426 places between them, taking babies from 20 weeks until the end of the August after their third birthday.

Good to know: Applications are not decided in the order they arrive, the site says so in capitals, and priority follows the Child Protection Act: children of working or studying parents first, then children on regular child protection benefit, children in families of three or more, and children of single parents. The pack asks for an employer's certificate and an income certificate from both parents. The fee schedule posted is still the one effective 1 September 2025, checked again in August 2026, so confirm current rates before budgeting. Everything runs in Hungarian, and each district sets its own numbers, so check your own municipality if you do not live in the XXII.

A full English-language run from babyhood to school age on one Pest site, nursery in its own building next door to the pre-school, unusual in a market where almost everything international sits in Buda.

Good to know: Term-time fees are quote-based: a once-only non-refundable registration fee plus a monthly childcare or tuition fee, sent as a financial policy from [email protected]. The only published prices are for the summer programme, EUR 255 a week full day including all meals, running 22 June to 19 August 2026 for ages 0 to 10, with a 10 percent discount for self-financing families paying by 1 May. Note the site gives two different nursery start ages, 20 weeks on the nursery page and 4 months on the admission page, so confirm which applies. Doors open at 7:30 with children expected by 9:00; half days to 12:30 exist for nursery only, pre-school is school day to 15:30 or full day to 17:30. Pre-schoolers must have turned 3 by 1 September and be toilet trained, and free or subsidised places exist for disadvantaged families with priority for VIII. district residents.

All-English education from 16 months to 6 in the leafy II. district, with every class pairing a native English speaker and a Hungarian educator who is fluent in English.

Good to know: Meals are built into the fee (three for a mornings-only place, four for full day) but no prices are published; financial details arrive with the confirmation of application letter. Admission for 2026-27 is open and runs year round: the school confirms your form has arrived within two working days and sends an offer or refusal within three. The youngest group, the Ducklings, takes up to 12 children aged 16 months to 2.5 years with two Hungarian nursery teachers and a native English-speaking assistant. The registered institution behind it is Almafa Ovoda, OM 202829.

Good to know: Only the EUR 920 registration fee is published; tuition lives in a 2026/2027 financial policy document you have to request, and the fee only holds the place if tuition is paid by 31 May 2026. Weekday hours are 8:00 to 17:00, and the school closes for a long summer break, 20 July to 31 August 2026, with returning children back on 1 September and new ones on 3 September. Transport is a paid door-to-door minibus run by Premier Bus Company, one way or return, not a school-owned service.

A fully licensed English-language nursery and kindergarten open since September 2002, now more than 100 children in seven classes, one of the longest-running international early years options in Buda.

Good to know: Tuition and availability are quote-based through the admission office, so budget nothing from the website. Part-time is offered only below age 3, three half days, three full days or five half days; from the Nursery group upwards it is five full days only. Optional extra classes generally start from age 2.5 and some only from age 4, and gluten-free or dairy-free meals need documentation from a gastroenterologist. The site publishes its licence numbers, OM 200282 for the kindergarten and S0237250 for the young nursery.

Takes babies from 9 months, the earliest start of any private English-language place on this page, then carries the same child through to 6 on one villa site with a 2,000 square metre garden below the Buda hills.

Good to know: The split is nursery 9 months to 2.5 years and kindergarten 2.5 to 6, with four daily meals and a choice of full or half day. No fees are published anywhere on the site, so email [email protected] for the current price list. The site sits behind a human-verification wall that blocks some browsers, so use the phone number if it will not load. It stays open all summer with a different theme each week, and the 2026 summer programme is running.

An English-Hungarian bilingual kindergarten running since 1998 in the green XVI. district, every group staffed by two Hungarian teachers plus one educator who speaks only English, across three adjacent buildings with their own gym and garden.

Good to know: No fees are published. The house rules say the kindergarten takes children from 2.5 and has no catchment area, so your address does not matter; enrolment starts with a pre-arranged visit and can happen mid-year when a place frees up, and settling in usually takes one to two weeks. Hours are 8:00 to 17:00 and it closes for three weeks every summer, the first three weeks of August. It holds a Judit Polgar Chess Playground reference designation. Group sizes, garden area and staffing ratios are not published anywhere on the site or in its official documents, so ask on the visit.

A paid English programme bolted onto ordinary Hungarian kindergartens: a native English educator sits with the group all day alongside the Hungarian teacher on a strict one person one language rule, with no mixing and no translation, and a path that continues into partner primary and secondary schools.

Good to know: It runs in four kindergartens (Obudai Szazszorszep, Szines Gyerekkert, Ujpesti Nyar and Budakeszi Szivarvany), so the district depends on which one has room, and note that Budakeszi is outside Budapest; the address above is the head office in Obuda. The programme year starts on 1 July. Instalment plans of 2, 4 or 12 payments have to be requested, the HUF 150,000 registration fee is inside the first year fee but becomes payable if you withdraw after the host kindergarten has accepted the child, and the whole fee is on top of whatever that kindergarten charges for meals. The III. district runs a kindergarten foreign language grant families can apply for.

Montessori running since 2006, with Hungarian and English speaking teachers working with children individually or in small groups rather than as a whole class.

Good to know: Kindergarten hours are 7:00 to 17:00 with optional afternoon classes on top. The separate Gyermekhaz toddler group takes 1.5 to 3 year olds from 8:00 to 17:00 with flexible attendance on a different number (+36 30 411 5160). No fees are published, and the supporting Montesz Foundation is worth asking about.

Waldorf pedagogy in Obuda for about fifty children aged 3 to 7 in two parallel mixed-age groups, built around a predictable daily and seasonal rhythm.

Good to know: Teaching is entirely in Hungarian, so this is the alternative-pedagogy option rather than the language option. It is enrolling: the site carries an admissions notice for 2026/2027 saying a place has come free and that a girl is preferred, with the kindergarten head Csaki Aniko as the contact (+36 20 215 8782, [email protected]). Days run 7:30 to 15:30 with arrival by 8:30 and the choice to collect after lunch, the entrance is from Laktanya utca, and no fees are published. The site prints the landline as a local number, 387-2530, without the country and city code, and gives the address without a postcode; 1033 is the postcode Obuda's own kindergarten guide uses for Harrer Pal utca.

The German-language answer in the Buda hills: around 40 children aged 2.5 to 7 working on the Infans concept, with observation-led individual curriculums.

Good to know: Everything runs in German, so it suits German-speaking families rather than beginners. Fees are published as a downloadable schedule: the monthly education fee covers all-day care and three meals a day, and is invoiced three times a year in blocks of four months, so a full year is twelve monthly amounts rather than ten. The one-off admission fee plus two monthly fees are invoiced once a place is confirmed in writing and are not refunded if the child does not start. The schedule on the site was still the 2025/26 one in August 2026, and the foundation undertakes to publish the coming year's version by 25 July, so ask for the current numbers. Visits start with a phone call and a form rather than a walk-in, admission is rolling and depends on free places, and notice to leave must be in by 31 January or 31 July.

A French-system maternelle from age 3 running the full petite, moyenne and grande section sequence, inside a school that carries the same child to the baccalaureat.

Good to know: Teaching is in French. Fees were approved by the foundation trustees on 28 May 2026 and paying yearly saves against the HUF 2,280,000 termly or monthly total, monthly billing being ten instalments from September to June. Extras are billed on top: clubs at HUF 55,000 for 1.5 hours a week in kindergarten, regular daycare at HUF 35,000 a year per weekly hour, and unplanned after-school pickup at HUF 2,500 an hour if you warn the school before 10am or HUF 4,000 after. The HUF 500 hourly rate applies only to the first fortnight of term, 1 to 18 September. The canteen is not priced in the published fee schedule, so ask what meals cost. The 2026-2027 registration campaign is closed, so write to [email protected] about the next intake.

The full international school route starting at kindergarten age: Early Years 1 takes children from 3 inside an Obuda school that runs all the way to 18, so there is no second admissions fight at 6.

Good to know: The cost sits on a different scale from a neighbourhood ovoda. On top of tuition, budget the HUF 175,000 application assessment fee, the HUF 500,000 registration fee, a refundable HUF 350,000 deposit invoiced with the first tuition payment, and HUF 520,000 a year for lunch, which for Early Years includes two snacks. Termly billing splits the year 2,251,200 then 1,554,400 twice.
