Most Hungarian health insurance is quote-only. Where a provider publishes rates, individual packages start at HUF 15,280 a month and English-first clinic plans at HUF 315,000 a year; every figure below was taken from the provider's own site and checked on 2 August 2026.
01
NEAK, the National Health Insurance Fund
PublicState health insurer (TAJ system)XIII. District (Pest)
The free or near-free baseline every other option on this page is compared against, and the only one that covers hospital care with no annual limit.
TAJ entitlementGP and specialist careHospital careSubsidised prescriptionsCross-border careVoluntary agreements
| Health service contribution, non-employed (2026) | HUF 12,300 per month |
| Same contribution, daily rate for part months | HUF 410 |
Good to know: NEAK administers the fund but does not sell you cover at the counter: employment-based entitlement is registered by the employer, TAJ cards are issued through the government offices, and the monthly contribution for the non-employed is paid to NAV, not here. Working language is Hungarian with a limited English section on the site.
02
Medicare Biztosito (formerly Medicover)
PrivateHungarian health insurer with its own clinic networkXIII. District (Pest)
The rare Hungarian insurer that publishes individual monthly premiums, and one that describes itself on its own site as Hungary's market-leading health insurer, with care delivered through its parent and largest service partner Medicare Zrt.
Individual health insuranceCorporate packagesOutpatient careLaboratory and diagnosticsDay surgeryTelemedicineDental screening
| Medicare Classic (individual) | HUF 15,280 per month |
| Medicare Medium (individual) | HUF 20,690 per month |
| Medicare Plus (individual) | HUF 23,395 per month |
Good to know: Packages are capped by visits rather than forints: 8 visits a year on Classic and 10 on Medium and Plus. The insurer states there is no waiting period and no deductible, cover can be taken from six months to 70 years of age, and appointments are booked on +36 1 465 3100. Its own about page describes the parent Medicare Zrt. as formerly named Medicover Zrt., without giving a date for the change. The insurer site is Hungarian only; the clinic group runs an English site.
03
FirstMed
PrivateEnglish-first private clinic with annual health plansI. District (Buda)
The default answer for expats who want everything in English: annual plans with named visit allowances, and a published price list rather than a quote process.
Annual health plansFamily medicineSpecialist consultationsHealth screeningDiagnosticsHospital insuranceDirect billing
| Core Plan (adult, per year) | HUF 315,000 |
| Premium Plan (adult, per year) | HUF 390,000 |
| Elite Plan (adult, per year) | HUF 615,000 |
| GP, internist or paediatric consultation | HUF 46,000 to 204,000 |
Good to know: These plans buy care at FirstMed rather than hospital cover, and the clinic sells inpatient protection separately as the MediHelp Blue and Cobalt packages, which it says are underwritten by Generali and priced on request. The Core Plan is listed as available only until age 65. Consultation prices are the published list effective from 1 January 2026 and vary by visit type. The SafetyWing provider map lists the clinic as accepting the SafetyWing card.
04
Generali Private Care
PrivateHungarian insurer, individual health packagesVI. District (Pest)
One of the broadest individual ranges on the Hungarian market, with four tiers from Start up to Exkluziv, which adds oncology diagnostics, international second opinions and VIP hospital accommodation.
Outpatient specialist careLaboratory testsCT and MRIAnnual screeningCare coordinationHome visitsPatient transport
Good to know: Quote-based: no premiums are published, and contracts run one to two years. Advanced imaging arrives from the Plusz tier upwards and annual screening from Komplex upwards, so the entry package is thinner than the marketing suggests. The Medi24 assistance line runs 24 hours on +36 1 465 3777, in Hungarian.
05
UNION PrivateMed Next
PrivateHungarian insurer, service-financing health coverVIII. District (Pest)
Strong on high-value imaging, with MRI, CT and PET-CT inside the core cover and a 24 hour medical call centre, sold both to individuals and through employers.
Outpatient specialist careLaboratory testsMRI, CT and PET-CTAmbulatory surgeryOne-day surgery24 hour medical call centreOnline doctor booking
Good to know: Quote-based and strictly domestic: the insurer states cover is valid only in Hungary at contracted providers, and excludes care abroad, emergency care, epidemic-related treatment, dental and cosmetic plastic surgery. Screening tests need an add-on package. Not available for anyone under six months or over 69 years of age. Baross utca 1 is the registered seat; the walk-in customer service listed on the site is at 1134 Budapest, Vaci ut 33.
06
Allianz Hungaria Egeszsegprogram
PrivateHungarian insurer, outpatient and inpatient packagesVIII. District (Pest)
Sold as three packages, outpatient only, inpatient only, or both together, so hospital protection can be bought on its own rather than inside a bundle.
Outpatient careHealth screeningAdvanced diagnosticsDay surgeryHospital treatmentSecond opinionRehabilitation care
Good to know: Quote-based through an adviser or the callback form, with no premiums published anywhere on the product page. Optional riders listed by the insurer cover surgical reimbursement, a hospital daily allowance, cancer diagnostics with medical case management, and critical illness. Sales and service are in Hungarian.
07
Groupama Medicare csoportos egeszsegbiztositas
PrivateHungarian insurer, employer group health coverXIV. District (Pest)
Worth knowing by name because it is a common employer benefit in Budapest: four tiers running from HUF 300,000 of outpatient cover a year up to unlimited outpatient care plus HUF 1 million of surgical cost cover.
Outpatient specialist careAdvanced diagnosticsDay surgeryHospital VIP careSecond opinionScreeningPatient transport
Good to know: This is a group product bought by companies, not something an individual signs up for online, and premiums are quoted case by case. Day surgery and hospital VIP care only appear from the second example package upwards, so check which one your employer actually chose before assuming an operation is covered. The number above is the Telecenter line published across the Groupama site; the Erzsebet kiralyne utja seat is taken from the MABISZ member listing rather than a page on groupama.hu.
08
UNIQA MediQa
PrivateHungarian insurer, individual health packagesXIII. District (Pest)
Four tiers, Bazis_60, Standard_60, Optimum_65 and Premium_65, with unlimited internal medicine visits even at entry level and a stated 20 percent discount at Medicover health centres on services the package does not cover.
Internal medicine visitsLaboratory testsScreeningAdvanced diagnosticsDay surgeryAccident benefits24 hour medical hotline
Good to know: Suspended for new business: checked on 2 August 2026, the UNIQA product page carries the notice that MediQa egeszsegbiztositas atmenetileg nem kotheto, meaning the cover cannot currently be taken out. The page names Medicover as the delivery network. Advanced diagnostics, day surgery and the accident lump sum only appear from the Optimum_65 tier. The UNIQA Med hotline is listed as 7 x 24 on +36 1 465 3125, in Hungarian.

GRANTIS
In person + onlineIndependent insurance brokerVI. District (Pest)
The practical fix for a market where almost nobody publishes premiums: a licensed broker that compares health products from Allianz, Generali, Groupama, Medicover, MediHelp, NN, UNION and UNIQA in one place.
Health insurance comparisonPremium quotesLife insurancePension savingsProperty insuranceAdviser meetings
Good to know: GRANTIS Hungary Zrt. states it was founded on 1 January 2014, and the site footer names the Hungarian National Bank as supervisor with MNB registration number 217020798185. Its comparison article does carry indicative monthly premium tables for several insurers, but they are broker tables labelled 2024 and last updated 24 August 2024 rather than current insurer rate cards, so ask for a live quote instead of planning around them. Advice is given in Hungarian.

Good to know: Feather states the cover is accepted for the White Card, family reunification, student and other long-stay permits, but confirm that with the immigration office rather than taking it as settled. There is a EUR 25 co-payment per event and no annual deductible, dental is limited to pain treatment up to EUR 500 a year, pre-existing conditions are excluded, and the policy runs for a maximum of five years from your arrival date. US cover is a paid optional add-on on both plans, for non-residents only. Whether either satisfies a Hungarian residence permit officer is a question for the immigration office.
Ratings, prices and details were last checked in August 2026 from each provider's public pages, Google Maps and Trustpilot; they change, so always confirm directly with the provider before booking or paying.
