Faith Communities in Budapest: Services in English and Other Languages

English language Sunday worship at 11:00 in an ecumenical congregation that the Reformed Church in Hungary describes as drawing around 15 nationalities, including students, embassy staff, refugees and employees of multinational companies.

Good to know: The congregation's own site did not respond in August 2026 (the server returned a 503 error and its certificate chain failed), so the 11:00 Sunday time, the address and the phone here come from two official parent bodies instead: the Reformed Church in Hungary and the Church of Scotland International Presbytery, which both publish Sunday 11:00 at Vorosmarty utca 51. Note that both of them link the congregation as scottishmission.org rather than the .com address; the two names point to the same server. The Reformed Church page describes the congregation as founded in 1841 and belonging to both the Church of Scotland and the Reformed Church in Hungary, with coffee and tea after worship, often followed by lunch, and smaller group activities. No first hand source could be reached in August 2026 for a pre-service welcome time or for any summer variation, so email the minister at [email protected] and confirm before you go.

Sunday service at 10:30 in English following the Church of England's Common Worship, with the congregation describing itself as bridging people of all faiths and nations.

Good to know: The congregation meets as a guest on the second floor of the Jozsefvaros Lutheran church building at Szentkiralyi utca 51, reachable in 5 to 8 minutes from Kalvin ter or Corvin negyed, with a lift as well as stairs. Sunday services are also broadcast on Zoom, and you email [email protected] in advance for the link. The chaplaincy publishes no phone number on its own site, so that field is left empty here rather than copied from a third party list that also gives the wrong postcode and an old domain for this church. Email is the working route. Confirm the time before you go.

English language Baptist congregation founded in 1991, meeting Sundays at 10:30 in Buda with members it says come from over 30 nations.

Good to know: The church meets in the Moricz Zsigmond Gimnazium building rather than its own premises, coffee fellowship starts at 10:00, and communion is on the second Sunday of the month; contact runs through [email protected]. School holidays can affect the venue, so confirm before you go.

English speaking congregation in South Buda meeting Sundays from 10:30 to 12:00, describing itself as people from many different nations, languages and denominations.

Good to know: The church names international students, teachers and relocated families as the people it is set up for, and lists small groups, a kids programme and volunteering in music, children's ministry and meal preparation as ways in. Holiday schedules vary, so confirm before you go.

A Sunday English language mass alongside the basilica's published Hungarian schedule of 8:30, a 10:00 high mass, 12:00 and 18:00, with weekday mass at 7:00 in the Maria Chapel and 18:00 in the basilica.

Good to know: Two published times disagree, so confirm before you go: the basilica's own schedule lists the English mass at 16:00 in the church itself, while the archdiocese list gives 17:00 in the crypt. The archdiocese also lists a Latin mass here on Sundays at 10:00, but the basilica's own schedule calls that slot simply a high mass and names no language, so treat the Latin as unconfirmed. Attending mass is free. Sightseeing is not: the basilica's ticket page states that every individual and group visitor must buy an entry ticket, checked at the entrance, and the treasury and panorama terrace run daily from 9:00 to 19:00, separate from the church interior which closes at 17:45 and opens only from 13:00 on Sundays.

Three languages on a Sunday in one riverside church: Hungarian mass at 10:00, a Ukrainian Divine Liturgy at 12:00 and an English mass at 18:00, with a Hungarian mass Monday to Saturday at 17:00.

Good to know: The three Sunday times above are the parish's own published schedule. Be aware that the archdiocese list of foreign language masses does not mention this Ukrainian liturgy at all, and puts the only Ukrainian mass in Budapest at Szent Mihaly templom, 1056 Budapest, Vaci utca 47/B on Sunday at 9:45, so a Ukrainian speaker has two options and it is worth phoning the parish on +36 1 318 3108 first. The tower viewpoint is a separate ticketed visit, open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 16:30 with the ticket desk closing at 16:00, and closed on Sundays.

The only English language Catholic mass in Buda on the archdiocese list, at 10:30 every Sunday in the hillside Sacred Heart Chapel above Huvosvolgy.

Good to know: The chapel is an outstation of the Zugliget Holy Family parish, whose main church is at 1125 Budapest, Szarvas Gabor ut 50; the earlier 7:45 Sunday mass in the chapel is in Hungarian, confession in the chapel is on the last Sunday of the month before mass, and Sunday masses are streamed on the parish YouTube channel. Confirm before you go.

German language mass every Sunday and feast day at 10:15 in the Szent Ferenc Sebei church by Batthyany ter, with community coffee straight afterwards in the courtyard and hall next door.

Good to know: Started in 1989 by the Hungarian German priest Franz Walper; the community describes itself as Germans, Austrians and Swiss living and working here plus French members and people married to Hungarians, and counts 60 to 80 people at Sunday mass in winter. Beyond mass there is an open breakfast for all one Tuesday morning a month and a half hour ecumenical peace prayer on the third Monday evening. The same church hosts a Croatian language mass at 17:00 on Sundays, and a separate German speaking Lutheran congregation worships at 10:00 on Sundays at 1014 Budapest, Tancsics Mihaly utca 28. Confirm before you go.

A Neolog congregation that describes its core community as around 90 people, worshipping in the Dohany Street synagogue and publishing an English guest page that invites visitors to its services and to Shabbat meals.

Good to know: The address above is the congregation office at Sip utca 12; the services themselves are in the synagogue on Dohany utca and in the Talmud Torah at Wesselenyi utca 7. From 1 April to 31 October Friday evening is at 18:00 and Shabbat morning at 9:30 in the Dohany Street synagogue; from 1 November to 31 March the same two services move to the Heroes' Temple with Friday at 17:00. Weekday prayer is at 7:30 in the morning and 18:00 in the evening in the Talmud Torah, and 8:00 and 18:00 on Sundays; the congregation's English guest page simplifies this to 7:30 every morning, so the Hungarian timetable is the one to trust. Services are in Hebrew and Hungarian, not English, though the guest page and the correspondence are in English. To attend, send the names of everyone coming in advance, expect a security check with ID or passport, cover knees and shoulders, and note that men and women sit separately and photography is not allowed during Shabbat services. Ticketed tourist visits to the synagogue and museum are run separately by Jewish Tour Hungary, on seasonal hours, and its own page states the complex is closed every Saturday.

Good to know: Two details worth knowing before you set out. First, the postcode: the congregation's own site footer says 1025, but both the Budapest Jewish Community and the Mazsihisz synagogue register give 1023 for Frankel Leo ut 49, and so does the congregation's own published prayer calendar, so 1023 is used here. Second, how current the times are: the congregation's imaidok page held only one prayer calendar in August 2026, covering April and May and posted on 10 March, so it will not tell you the current Friday time. The Budapest Jewish Community lists Frankel as Friday 18:30, Saturday morning 10:00 and weekdays online at 19:00, while the congregation's own April calendar also shows Monday and Thursday morning Shacharit, so call +36 1 326 1445 to settle it. The Budapest Jewish Community's event calendar lists a Shabbat session for children aged 3 to 10 every Friday from 18:30 to 19:30, and the congregation also runs the BBYO youth community for teenagers aged 12 to 16.

A Progressive congregation, registered since October 1992 and a member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, with Kabbalat Shabbat every Friday evening and a Shacharit service every second Saturday morning.

Good to know: Check the address twice, because the congregation contradicts itself. Its Hungarian site and the English homepage both give the synagogue it moved into on 24 October 2024, at Kertesz utca 32 on the ground floor (doorbell 21), while its own English contact page still lists the pre-2024 venue, Balint House at 16 Revay street in the VI. district. Kertesz utca 32 is the current one. For times, the English homepage states that in July and August Kabbalat Shabbat is every Friday at 19:00 followed by kiddush; outside those months the time is published seasonally, so email [email protected]. Services use Hebrew with Hungarian translation and transliteration in the congregation's own prayer book rather than being held in English, though the congregation says American and British Reform Jews working in Hungary are among its members and it runs a full English site. The postal address for letters is 1088 Budapest, Baross utca 10.

The main mosque of the Organization of Muslims in Hungary, open for the five daily prayers, with Friday prayer at 13:00 in the Mawaqit timetable the organisation maintains for this mosque.

Good to know: Use the right page for the right thing. The organisation's iszlam.com page for the Budapest Mosque carries only the address, phone, fax and a map; the day to day information sits on its Mawaqit listing, which gives Friday prayer at 13:00, Eid prayer at 7:30 and 8:30, a women's prayer space, an ablutions room, disabled access, parking, funeral prayer and Ramadan iftar, and announces the Al-Noor school for Quran memorisation, Arabic and Islamic studies every Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00. The same organisation lists a second Budapest prayer house, the Al-Huda mosque at 1081 Budapest, Dobozi utca 1, and runs an English section on iszlam.com that was still being updated in 2026. The office line is answered until 18:00. The five daily prayer times move with the sun all year, so check the timetable on the day.

The centre states that its joint meditation is held in English on Thursday evenings at 19:00, in a converted brewery that it describes as the largest Diamond Way centre in Europe at 3,600 square metres.

Good to know: Meditation is free of charge and the centre is open to visitors every evening from 18:00, with an introduction for newcomers if you arrive at least half an hour early; the centre advises attending the English Thursday session only if your English is strong, and suggests Monday evening if you want to meet experienced practitioners. Monday evenings also carry a public talk on Buddhist topics at no cost, and the library opens Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00. The same page gives the closing time twice and differently, once as 21:00 and once as 22:00, so treat 21:00 as the safe assumption. The centre is in the pedestrian stretch of Huszar utca beside Rozsak tere.

Open daily from 4:30 to 21:00 in Csillaghegy, with a published Sunday programme running from 15:00 bhajana through a 16:00 talk, kirtana at 17:00, a vegan feast at 17:30 and evening worship at 19:00.

Good to know: Anyone may come; shoes go in the entrance showroom or you use the overshoes provided, clothing should cover knees, shoulders and chest, and children need an accompanying adult, with a creche and playroom available on request. Feast coupons are bought at the temple reception. The community also runs Food for Life, which it says distributes around 500,000 meals a year in Hungary. The website is fully in English, but confirm the language of a given talk before you go.

The national Baha'i centre publishes an English page, an English and German speaking contact number and a bilingual Hungarian and English newsletter, and lists community building activities at several Budapest locations.

Good to know: The centre is on the second floor at Ferenciek tere 3 (door 4) and is open Tuesday to Thursday from 9:30 to 16:30, with visits by appointment rather than fixed public service times; a second Budapest venue, the Varosmajori Kucko, is at 1122 Budapest, Csaba utca 7/b. There is no published day and time for a general public gathering, so email [email protected] or phone the English and German line on +36 30 654 2787 and confirm before you go.

The only Quaker group in Hungary listed by Friends World Committee for Consultation, Europe and Middle East Section, meeting for worship in the unprogrammed Quaker style.

Good to know: The directory lists the meeting as by arrangement rather than at a fixed weekly time and address, with Vera Varady as clerk and contact at [email protected], and points to a Facebook page called Budapest Quakers, Budapesti Kvekerek.
