The largest consular operation for English speakers in Budapest, on Szabadsag ter, with a published emergency duty officer line; the embassy states that all routine passport requests are processed and printed in the United States and that renewals normally take about 10 working days.

Good to know: The embassy publishes +36 1 475 4400 for after-hours and holiday emergencies, with a duty officer on call, and +36 1 475 4164 as the routine American Citizen Services line, plus [email protected]. Its services page states that an appointment is required for all routine consular services and that the post is offering emergency appointments only for passport and citizenship services needing an in-person appearance, with limited availability. The passports page adds that adults holding a 10 year passport may be eligible to renew by mail with online payment, average turnaround 5 to 6 weeks, and that contactless payment is not available because mobile phones are not permitted inside the embassy. The appointment link above is the one the embassy itself publishes; it did not load from the network used for this check, so allow for that.

Good to know: GOV.UK states that public access to embassies is by appointment only, that the embassy opens Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 16:00 and Friday 10:00 to 14:00, and that consular assistance by phone is available 24/7. The embassy number is +36 1 429 6200 and GOV.UK gives 020 7008 5000 for urgent contact with the FCDO in London, selecting consular services for British nationals. Full British passports are not listed among the services here: the embassy page offers the emergency travel document, applied for online, and notarial and documentary services, while GOV.UK routes overseas passport applications to an online HM Passport Office service. The consular section is on the ground floor with step-free access, though the road outside is steep and parking is difficult. One caveat on the link above: it is the FCDO enquiry and emergency contact form that the embassy publishes, not a slot booking system, and on 2 August 2026 it redirected to the FCDO contact home page rather than to a Budapest page.

In the Bank Center on Szabadsag ter, with a fully itemised euro fee list covering passports, emergency travel certificates and foreign birth registration, which is the route many Irish-descended residents use.

Good to know: The embassy states that it is open to the public Monday to Friday 09:30 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 16:30, that general consular services are by appointment only booked by email or on +36 1 301 4960, and that the only exception is a consular emergency. Outside working hours it asks Irish citizens to call the same number and leave a voicemail with name and phone number, monitored by the duty officer, or to call the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin on +353 1 408 2000. Visa questions go to [email protected]. The entrance is the Bank Center glass building, a short walk from Arany Janos utca on metro 3 or Deak Ferenc ter on metro 2.

Good to know: Read the office page before you travel across town. It shows the general office Monday to Thursday 08:30 to 16:30 and Friday 08:30 to 13:30, and consular services Monday to Friday 08:30 to 12:30, every entry marked appointment. It also shows the passport services counter and the notarial services counter as closed on all seven days, and instead directs applicants to mail passport applications by registered mail to the Regional Passport Processing Centre, Embassy of Canada, Laurenzerberg 2, 1010 Vienna, contactable at [email protected]. Do not assume a passport or a notarial act can be done at the counter in Budapest without ringing first. Emergency consular assistance is available 24/7 and the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa takes calls on +1 613 996 8885, collect where available.

Australia has no embassy in Budapest: Ms Cecilia Gall, Honorary Consul with jurisdiction throughout Hungary, is based at Eotvos Lorand University and arranges passport appointments, while the Australian Embassy in Vienna provides full consular and passport services for Hungary, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Good to know: The consulate is by appointment only. The embassy states that honorary consuls do not offer notarial services, so certified copies, oaths, statutory declarations and apostilles mean the embassy in Vienna at Gertrude-Froehlich-Sandner-Strasse 2, 1100 Vienna. No local Budapest telephone number is published for the honorary consul, only email addresses on the Vienna embassy page, so the number shown here is the Vienna switchboard. The fees above are the Vienna in-person euro rates effective February 2026; the embassy notes it takes Visa and Mastercard only, no cash and no American Express, and that fees are adjusted on the first of each month for exchange rates. Up in the Castle District on Uri utca, with an online appointment system, step-free access to the consular section and the clearest published emergency walk-in rule of any mission on this page.

Good to know: The embassy publishes consular counter hours of Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:00 plus Tuesday and Thursday 13:30 to 15:30, telephone enquiries Monday to Friday 08:00 to 09:00, and collection of finished passports and ID cards Monday to Thursday 13:30 to 15:30. It states that the legal and consular section receives callers in principle only by prior appointment through its online system, but that in an urgent emergency such as a lost passport you may still come in person during normal counter hours, and it asks that you report the emergency by phone or email beforehand. Outside office hours it gives +36 1 488 3500 for emergencies. It also asks visitors to arrive 15 minutes early at the consular entrance on the Lant utca side for security, says companions are not admitted apart from guardians of minors and people who cannot attend alone, notes that the consulate has step-free access, and warns that the Castle District has special parking rules.

France splits its Budapest operation: the consular counter is at Fo utca 17 in the I. district while post goes to the embassy at Kossuth Lajos ter 13-15, 1055 Budapest, and appointments are booked through the national consulat.gouv.fr slot system.

Good to know: Strictly by appointment: Monday to Thursday 08:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, Friday 08:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 15:30. Fees are paid in forints by card or cash, only the person concerned may enter, and large bags and animals are refused at the door. General questions go to Service France Consulaire on +36 1 999 72 60 (local rate) or +33 1 76 43 18 88, weekdays 09:00 to 17:00 Paris time, and that service does not handle visas. The consular emergency number, for serious accidents, deaths, assaults and worrying disappearances only, is +36 1 374 11 75.

A textbook case of the consular section sitting at a different address from the embassy: paperwork happens at the Cancelleria Consolare on Javor utca 4 in Zuglo, while the chancery is at Stefania ut 95, 1143 Budapest, a few streets away.

Good to know: Public hours at the consular chancellery are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 09:00 to 12:00, with Monday afternoon 13:30 to 15:30 and Wednesday closed. The embassy states that appointments for citizenship, passport, visa and CIE applications must be requested exclusively through the Prenot@Mi portal, with other questions to [email protected] and out-of-hours emergency mail to [email protected]. It publishes a proven-emergency number, +36 30 952 3053, staffed Monday to Thursday 17:00 to 22:00, Friday 14:30 to 22:00 and weekends and holidays 08:00 to 22:00, and it states plainly that for security reasons an Emergency Travel Document cannot be issued outside office hours, so a passport lost on a Friday night waits until Monday. Regional emergencies are routed to honorary consuls: Szeged on +36 70 236 7251 for Csongrad, Bacs-Kiskun and Bekes, Nyiregyhaza on +36 30 942 9553 for Szabolcs-Szatmar, Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen and Hajdu-Bihar, and Pecs on +36 30 253 1302 for Baranya, Somogy and Tolna. Fees are published as a quarterly tariff rather than a fixed list, and access to several services depends on AIRE registration.

A short walk from Oktogon on the M1 metro and the 4 and 6 trams, with a dedicated 24 hour consular emergency mobile that the embassy publishes on its own contact page.

Good to know: The consular section sees the public Monday to Friday 09:00 to 13:00, with Thursday afternoons 14:00 to 16:00 added from 1 September to 15 June; from 15 June to 31 August it is mornings only. The embassy states that every consular formality requires a prior appointment, booked on +36 1 202 4006, and asks people not to turn up without one. It publishes a 24 hour consular emergency mobile, +36 30 924 8092, and says it should be used only for serious matters that cannot wait until the next working day. Good to know: Appointment only and the windows are narrow: Monday 13:00 to 14:00, Tuesday to Thursday 09:30 to 12:00, closed Friday. NetherlandsWorldwide warns that the embassy in Hungary is processing a large number of applications, that you may not be able to book a passport or ID card slot straight away, and that you should apply several months before your document expires, with new slots released weekly. Passports, ID cards and legalisations are booked through the online system; emergency documents and consular statements are arranged instead by emailing [email protected], which is the address to use if your passport has just gone. Payment is by bank card in euro or cash in forints. Phone +36 1 336 6300, or +31 247 247 247 from the Netherlands; the WhatsApp number +31 857 737 400 takes messages only, not calls, and the ministry asks that no privacy-sensitive details be sent to it.

Austria is Hungary's closest Western neighbour and its Budapest embassy handles the full document set, from passports and ID cards to criminal record extracts and certifications, on Benczur utca near Varosliget, with the national fee tariff published in euro.

Good to know: The embassy states that it can be reached Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30, that public counter hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 11:00 and that other times can be arranged by appointment. Its passport and ID card pages both state that the application must be made in person and that an appointment must be arranged by email or phone beforehand. Outside official hours it publishes a standby number for urgent consular emergencies only, +36 30 211 5157. The fees above come from the embassy's own Konsulargebuehren page under the Konsulargebuehrengesetz 1992; the same page notes that acts arising directly from the birth of a child, including a first passport, are exempt within two years of the birth. Austria also encourages residents to use the free Auslandsregistrierung so the ministry can reach you in a crisis.

Serves one of the larger EU communities in Hungary from Varosligeti fasor, with a full euro fee table published in English covering passports, notarial acts and EU emergency travel documents.

Good to know: The published opening hours are unusually tight: Monday 09:00 to 13:00 and Wednesday 12:00 to 18:00, closed Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, so plan around them. The section states that since 1 January 2022 all consular payments are accepted exclusively in euro, that a wheelchair ramp can be provided if required, and that it does not process visa applications. The EU emergency travel document in the fee table is the standard national tariff; the European Commission limits that document to EU citizens who lose a passport in a country outside the EU, so it is not the route to expect inside Hungary.

Serves the very large Romanian community in Hungary, and appointments for passports, notarial acts and civil status paperwork run through the Romanian foreign ministry's national online consular counter rather than a local booking page.

Good to know: Treat this entry as the least verified on the page. The address and phone come from the Romanian foreign ministry's own econsulat.ro mission database, which lists the embassy as 1146 Budapest, Thokoly ut 72 on +36 1 384 7689. The embassy's own site at budapesta.mae.ro refused every connection on 2 August 2026, so the consular counter's opening hours could not be checked, and it could not be confirmed whether the consular section receives the public at Thokoly ut 72 or at some other address. Phone before you travel. The same database lists consulates general at Munkacsy utca 12a in Gyula on +36 66 464 579 and Kelemen Laszlo utca 5 in Szeged on +36 62 424 431, which are often closer if you live in the east or south.

The mission for a fast-growing community, working entirely in English from Buzavirag utca in Buda and also accredited to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a weekly-refreshed online appointment system.

Good to know: Office hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:30 with a 13:00 to 14:00 lunch break; visa applications are accepted Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 12:00 and completed documents collected Monday to Thursday 16:00 to 17:00. Telephone lines for visas and passports are open 10:00 to 12:00. The after-hours and holiday emergency helpline is +36 30 515 4192, and the embassy asks that it not be used for appointments or routine consular questions. Since 1 September 2025 only ICAO compliant photographs are accepted for passport applications.

Another split address: the consular and overseas Chinese affairs office sits at Benczur utca 18 while the chancery is around the corner at Varosligeti fasor 20-22, so go to the right door.

Good to know: Reception is Monday to Thursday 09:00 to 11:45 for lodging and collecting documents, plus Monday and Wednesday afternoons 14:15 to 16:30, and the section is closed on Friday. The embassy publishes those hours in Chinese, Hungarian and English, so the site is usable without a Chinese speaker: the Hungarian section at hu.china-embassy.gov.cn/hu/ carries a KONZULI UGYEK area with the opening hours, visa and consular certification pages and a running list of closure notices, which is worth checking before you set off because the hours have been adjusted several times. The staffed enquiry line is answered on working days 14:00 to 18:00 on +36 1 211 3113, with +36 1 211 3112 as the Chinese citizens hotline, and the embassy asks you to email [email protected] or [email protected] if nobody picks up.
