Accountants in Budapest: English-Speaking Bookkeepers Compared

In Hungary a monthly bookkeeper is not a luxury, it is close to unavoidable. Company accounts must be kept under Act C of 2000, financial statements have to be in Hungarian, and the annual report is due by 31 May, per Accace. Helpers Hungary puts it bluntly for foreign owners: all companies must have accounting services through a licensed local accountant from the date of incorporation. Sole traders get off lighter but still face monthly or quarterly filings that are almost entirely in Hungarian.

The good news is that this market publishes prices more openly than most. DigitalConto lists KATA sole trader bookkeeping from HUF 14,900 a month, flat-rate taxation from HUF 21,900 and a Kft from HUF 49,900, valid from 1 January 2026 and excluding 27 percent VAT. Helpers Finance publishes company packages at EUR 270 and EUR 440 a month plus VAT, and FirmaX advertises complete accounting from EUR 120 a month. For a market-wide sanity check, the Hungarian trade platform JoSzaki puts KATA bookkeeping at HUF 6,000 to 27,940 a month (average HUF 15,644) and Bt bookkeeping at HUF 25,000 to 68,580 (average HUF 42,233).

Titles matter here. A konyvelo (bookkeeper) does the monthly grind: invoices, VAT, payroll, filings and the annual report, and anyone preparing statutory accounts has to sit on the official register of bookkeeping service providers run through the Hungarian State Treasury and the Ministry of National Economy. An adotanacsado (tax adviser) is a separate registered qualification and is who you pay for structuring, residency and cross-border questions, not for keying in receipts. A konyvvizsgalo (auditor), regulated by the Hungarian Chamber of Auditors, signs off statutory audits. Read that rule the right way round: Act C of 2000, section 155 makes an audit compulsory for every business keeping double-entry books unless two tests hold together, average net sales revenue over the two previous financial years no higher than HUF 600 million and average headcount no higher than 50, so crossing either one brings the audit back. WTS Klient dates the rise from HUF 300 million to financial years beginning in 2025. Most expats need only the first. This page lists verified English-speaking providers, from one-person online bookkeepers for freelancers to the outsourcing firms that run payroll for multinationals, with prices as published in August 2026.

The free NAV route (do it yourself)

Hungary has a genuinely good free option for individuals. NAV prepares a pre-filled draft personal income tax return (eSZJA) that is available online from 15 March following the tax year. Anyone who had a job and received wages for the whole of the previous year and does nothing by 20 May simply has the draft turn into their official return, per NAV. If you cannot log in electronically you can ask NAV to send the draft, including by SMS to +36 (30) 344-4304.

Since 16 January 2025 the old username and password Ugyfelkapu login no longer works. State services such as eSZJA and ONYA now need either Ugyfelkapu+ with two-factor authentication or the Digitalis Allampolgar (DAP) mobile app, as announced by the government offices. Beyond the tax return, NAV's Online Nyomtatvanykitolto Alkalmazas at onya.nav.gov.hu lets you file many forms straight in the browser, from tax number and registration matters to small business and tax advance declarations.

Who can realistically go it alone: an employee whose only income is a Hungarian salary already reported by the employer, who is not claiming anything unusual, and who just wants to check the draft and let the 20 May deadline pass. Who should not: anyone running a company or a sole proprietorship, anyone with foreign income, rental income, share options or crypto, and anyone registered for VAT. NAV states that self-employed and VAT-registered individuals must supplement the draft and still file it themselves, because their drafts never become official automatically. Note also that NAV's English-language website is partly under construction, so the detailed guidance is in Hungarian only; the customer service line is +36 (1) 428 51 00 and the head office is at 1054 Budapest, Szechenyi utca 2.

The options, compared

Published 2026 monthly fees start around HUF 14,900 for a KATA sole trader and HUF 49,900 for a small Kft, while expat-focused firms quote company packages from EUR 120 to EUR 440 a month plus VAT and Accace sells one-off items at fixed prices through its own shop; the rest of the firms below are quote-only, and every price shown comes from the provider's own published price page.

05

Sederjessy Accounting Finance

PrivateBoutique bookkeeper for foreign-owned SMEsII. District (Buda)

A small Buda practice with a dedicated English page that spells out the taxes a foreign owner actually meets: 9 percent corporate tax, 10 percent KIVA and the 2 percent local business tax.

Good to know: Quote-based, with rates set by business activity and volume; the firm handles Kft, Bt, Kkt and sole trader (egyeni vallalkozo) clients, and the English content is a section of an otherwise Hungarian site, so the first email is the real language test.

06

Perscriptor Accountancy Office

PrivateAccounting office working in English and FrenchVIII. District (Pest)

An established Pest office in the Modusz building that runs a fully digitised, paperless process and works in English and French, useful if your reporting pack has to satisfy a foreign parent company.

Good to know: Quote-based, but the site promises an offer within four hours of a request; office hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 16:30 and Friday to 14:00, and professional liability cover is held with Allianz Hungaria.

07

ABT Treuhand Group

PrivateTax and accounting firm with expat personal tax deskIII. District (Buda)

The pick when the problem is your own SZJA rather than a company: ABT runs a named expat tax service covering tax residency determination, foreign income, tax advance calculations and social security position.

Good to know: Quote-based with no published fees, and the firm is set up for individuals on employer assignments as much as walk-in freelancers; it operates from Obuda in Buda, has more than 30 years of history and is a member of the ETL Global network for cross-border cases.

08

WTS Klient Hungary

PrivateTax advisory and accounting firmXIV. District (Pest)

Founded in 1998 and the exclusive Hungarian member of the WTS Global network, this is a tax adviser first and a bookkeeper second, and its free English newsletter is one of the better plain-language sources on Hungarian tax changes.

Good to know: Quote-based and pitched at companies rather than individuals; useful if your question is structural (fiscal representation, VAT registration for a foreign entity, audit obligation) rather than routine monthly bookkeeping. The firm has grown by acquisition: it took over Finacont and then fully merged with VGD Hungary on 1 January 2025, so older reviews and referrals may still name VGD; the contracting entity is WTS Klient Gazdasagi Tanacsado Kft.

09

Accace Hungary

PrivateAccounting and payroll outsourcing firmXIII. District (Pest)

A CEE outsourcing group that states 70 Hungarian experts on its Hungary page, and the only firm here with an actual online shop where fixed-price items can be bought without a sales call.

Cegkapu administration (12 months)EUR 1,560 (+VAT)

Good to know: The Hungary page carries no phone number and no monthly bookkeeping rate, so recurring accounting is quote-based through the contact form. The prices listed here are one-off items sold through the Accace eShop at shop.accace.com, quoted excluding VAT with the VAT-inclusive figure shown beside each one; the same shop describes the Hungarian team as more than 60 local experts, so the headcount claim depends on which Accace page you read.

Good to know: Built for corporate volumes rather than one-person businesses, so expect a scoping call before any number appears; useful when a group needs the same accounting and payroll setup replicated across several CEE countries. Its own pages give two different staff figures, 500 professionals in the CEE offices on the home page and close to 600 across four countries on the about page.

Good to know: Quote-based and aimed at subsidiaries of multinationals and larger Hungarian companies; the office sits in the Vaci Greens F building at Fiastyuk utca 4-8, second floor, and the general mailbox is still on the legacy mazars.hu domain.

14

BDO Hungary

PrivateAudit and tax firm with expatriate servicesX. District (Pest)

Runs a dedicated expatriate service line covering personal income tax and social security across two countries, tax residency determination and registration with the Hungarian authorities.

Good to know: Quote-based, and the offer is framed around employees on international assignment, so it fits people sent to Budapest by an employer better than local freelancers; coordination with BDO offices abroad is part of the pitch, but a US return still needs a US preparer.

Ratings, prices and details were last checked in August 2026 from each provider's public pages, Google Maps and Trustpilot; they change, so always confirm directly with the provider before booking or paying. Frequently asked questions

Do I legally need an accountant for a Hungarian company?

In practice yes. Hungarian companies keep double-entry books under Act C of 2000, statements must be prepared in Hungarian and the annual report is due by 31 May, and anyone preparing statutory accounts must be on the official register of bookkeeping service providers. Helpers Hungary states that all companies must have accounting through a licensed local accountant from the date of incorporation. A statutory audit is a separate question, and the test runs the opposite way from the usual summary. Act C of 2000, section 155, makes an audit compulsory for every company keeping double-entry books unless both exemption conditions hold together: average net sales revenue over the two previous financial years no higher than HUF 600 million, and average headcount no higher than 50. Exceeding either one puts the audit back. The revenue figure was lifted from HUF 300 million for financial years beginning in 2025 according to WTS Klient, and the same section withholds the exemption from Hungarian branches of foreign companies, from members of a consolidated group, and from companies carrying more than HUF 10 million of public debt over 60 days overdue. Confirm your own position with an auditor or with NAV.

How much does a bookkeeper cost in Budapest?

On published price lists in 2026: DigitalConto charges from HUF 14,900 a month for a KATA sole trader, from HUF 21,900 for flat-rate taxation, from HUF 39,900 for an itemised sole trader and from HUF 49,900 for a Kft, Bt or Zrt, all plus 27 percent VAT. Expat-focused firms price in euros: FirmaX from EUR 120 a month, Helpers Finance EUR 270 a month for a micro company and EUR 440 for a small one, both plus VAT. The Hungarian trade platform JoSzaki puts the wider market at HUF 6,000 to 27,940 a month for KATA bookkeeping and HUF 25,000 to 68,580 for a Bt, with payroll billed separately at roughly HUF 3,000 to 5,842 per person per month.

What is the difference between a konyvelo, an adotanacsado and a konyvvizsgalo?

A konyvelo is a bookkeeper who handles the recurring work: recording invoices, VAT returns, payroll, monthly and quarterly filings and the annual report. Preparing statutory accounts requires registration on the bookkeeping service providers' register administered through the Hungarian State Treasury and the Ministry of National Economy. An adotanacsado is a separately registered tax adviser you engage for planning, tax residency and cross-border questions. A konyvvizsgalo is a statutory auditor regulated by the Hungarian Chamber of Auditors (MKVK) under Act LXXV of 2007, who audits financial statements. Most expats need a konyvelo, occasionally an adotanacsado, and an auditor only when the company falls outside the exemption in section 155 of Act C of 2000.

Can I file my Hungarian tax return myself?

If your only income is a Hungarian salary, yes, and you barely have to act. NAV publishes a pre-filled draft (eSZJA) from 15 March, and for people who had a job and received wages all year the draft automatically becomes the official return if nothing is filed by 20 May. You need Ugyfelkapu+ or the DAP app to log in, since plain Ugyfelkapu access ended on 16 January 2025. NAV states that self-employed people and those registered for VAT must supplement the draft and file it themselves, so sole traders, company owners and anyone with foreign income are better off paying a bookkeeper.

Can a Hungarian accountant file my US tax return?

No. The firms on this page file Hungarian returns; a US citizen or green card holder living in Hungary still has separate IRS obligations and needs a US preparer as well. This matters more than it used to: the IRS confirms that termination of the US and Hungary income tax convention took effect on 8 January 2023, and the treaty ceased to have effect for withholding taxes from 1 January 2024 and for other taxes for taxable periods beginning on or after 1 January 2024. Larger firms here (ABT, BDO, Forvis Mazars) coordinate with international networks on the Hungarian side, but they do not prepare Form 1040.
